It's so painfully symbolic that they showed us Ash's Butterfree - his first goodbye - just before announcing that we'll have to say goodbye to Ash himself as the protagonist.
And at the same time showing: just like he met him again, we too will meet Ash again someday.

Given how all of sudden they're releasing a special with AU Ash, I think this serves as a proof that they are going to release similar "non-timeline" specials/movies about Ash & Pikachu in the future. After all, the duo is still iconic and beneficial for marketing. #anipoke
