Another long day working on the #GenocideAmendment - grateful for amazing colleagues and constant encouragement from #Uyghur and #HK friends who are suffering. “I’d rather be ashes than dust”.

A Minister has just texted a big group of MPs about the #GenocideAmendment “There are many problems with the...amendment, including the fact that past genocides might be in scope (which could mean Turkey, could even mean Canada or Australia) Is this true? Judge for yourself:

Very strange arguments here from @DominicRaab on #GenocideAmendment 1. Amend. DOES NOT provide for a criminal process, but a “preliminary determination”. 2. Two former Supreme Court judges said High Court was correct authority when drafting. 3. He wants judges to investigate?? twitter.com/BBCPolitics/st…

😡Shocking. @LOS_Fisher article on leaked Government advice re: #GenocideAmendment. Here's the real reason Government wanted to offer an alternative: telegraph.co.uk/politics/2021/…

If the Government was *really* opposed to the #GenocideAmendment because it “gives power to courts” they would have accepted the amendment below which we gave them over a week ago. They didn’t.

Planning the next stage of the #GenocideAmendment with @ipacglobal colleagues @MPIainDS @Nus_Ghani and @DavidAltonHL #Uyghurs must have their day in court. Without a judgment, the @GOVUK won’t act. As HongKongers would say: add oil!

Update on #GenocideAmendment 👉Revised version back in House of Lords 2nd Feb publications.parliament.uk/pa/bills/lbill… 👉Commons vote could be v soon after, tbc. 👉Expecting a Gov concession in the Commons to buy off our rebels. Our position: no court, no deal. Here’s why 👇

#GenocideAmendment is back in the Commons on 9th Feb. Lords 2nd Feb. @BorisJohnson is clear: the U.K. *will not* use the word “genocide” without a court ruling - but there’s no way of getting one at the moment. Don’t deny #Uyghurs their day in court.

#GenocideAmendment latest: in their desperation to keep this out of the courts, the Government is hosting a (very rare) briefing for *all peers* on Monday. The only lawyer they could find to brief against us was Wolfson. They tried Lords Hope and Pannick who told them where to go
