Is there anything we can do to prevent long COVID, once we catch the virus? Research by @zalaly and colleagues shows that Paxlovid treatment within 5 days of a positive test led to 26% less risk of #longCOVID, regardless of vaccine status. (1/2) medrxiv.org/content/10.110…

Excited to share our work by @BenIsraelow et al published today. We asked what are the roles of antibodies vs. T cells in controlling primary infection, reinfection, and vaccine-mediated protection? (1/n) science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

The #LongCovidAwarenessDay (today) is important because in many countries and regions around the world, long COVID is not discussed and people are suffering in isolation. Awareness is needed to improve diagnosis, medical care, research, and support of patients 💙

In this study, @MiyuMoriyama et al investigate how well SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOC) suppress MHC I needed for recognition by cytotoxic T cells. This question is important to understand how well the virus limits CD8 killing 🧵(1/) @biorxivpreprint biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

This thread is about alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) - meat allergy induced by tick bites. I’ve been living with AGS for >2 yrs. I hope this info will help those who suffer from this illness without knowing the cause. Please help bring awareness to #AGS (1/n) resident360.nejm.org/clinical-pearl…

@sciliz I’m concerned because of the putative ability of XBB.1.5 to have increased capacity to infect cell types that express even lower levels of ACE2. This will increase tropism and possibly persistence in cell types that are long lived.

Thrilled to share this Comment in @TheLancetInfDis that I coauthored with the amazing @PutrinoLab on “Why we need a deeper understanding of the pathophysiology of long COVID”. Sharing an accessible document here. Thank you for reading and sharing 🙏🏼 thelancet.com/journals/lanin…

“Long COVID has not received anywhere near the same level of attention or resources: the result has been widespread harm to health, societies, and economies. 3 years in, more is needed to recognise, treat, and support patients with long COVID.” 💯 thelancet.com/journals/lance…

I am thrilled to coauthor an editorial piece for @SciImmunology with @EricTopol highlighting the need for Operation Nasal Vaccine—Lightning ⚡️ speed to counter COVID-19. Nasal spray boosters can induce local immunity to ⬇️ infection & transmission. science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

I am honored to be included in this video to discuss #longCOVID. So grateful to the patients including @pamelarbishop @EfCovid19 @loscharlos for speaking up and teaching us what living with COVID is like. Please watch this today. @KnowableMag youtube.com/watch?v=7lfGu_…

What an amazing report to wake up to! Pfizer vaccine provided 100% protection in 12-15 year olds (18 cases of infection in the placebo group, and 0 among the children who received the vaccine). The n is small, but gives me so much hope for school opening in the near future. A++ twitter.com/apoorva_nyc/st…

Our new study by @JieunOh9 @ericsongg @MiyuMoriyama et al shows that immune priming via intranasal route provides superior protection against heterologous respiratory virus challenge. The key is in inducing local secretory IgA with broader coverage. (1/) science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

We are looking for people who never had COVID or who recovered from COVID as important control participants in our Yale LISTEN study. Please sign up if you can help us understand the pathophysiology of #longCOVID and post-vaccine adverse events 🙏🏼 medicine.yale.edu/ycci/listen-st…

How does COVID reinfection happen? Our deep dive into the immune profiles during the 1st and 2nd infections. A case study. Work led by @sneakyvirus1 @AndersonBrito_ Paul Turbin @peowenlu @BenIsraelow and Marwan Azar (1/) medrxiv.org/content/10.110…

A new study by @YaleSPH @ChenKai_yale & team shows that SARS-CoV-2’s reproductive number is attributable to seasonal factors; temperature (3.73%), humidity (9.35%) and UV radiation (4.44%). We need to vaccinate before the cold, dry, dark winter hits. news.yale.edu/2021/06/14/hea…

How do the various mutations within the SARS-CoV-2 variants impact vaccine-induced immunity? The amazing @carolilucas @VogelsChantal @InciYildirim11 led this study with with help from others to tackle this question - using 18 CoV-2 variants. (1/n) medrxiv.org/content/10.110…

In our study published today, we show; 1) mRNA vaccines (2 shots) induce robust antibodies & T cells to SARS-CoV-2 2) certain mutations in VOC ⬆️ Ab escape 3) prior infection + 2 mRNA shots produce very high neutralizing Ab against most VOC 🦠(1/) nature.com/articles/s4158…

Long COVID participants also had reduced central memory T cells and increased exhausted CD4 and CD8 T cells. The exhausted T cells suggest chronic antigens stimulating these T cells. What they are we do not know yet. (8/)

A while ago, @MiyuMoriyama et al showed that SARS-CoV-2 variants suppress MHC I levels in infected cells to the same degree as the ancestral virus. Then came the Omicron variants. A short update. (1/) biorxiv.org/content/10.110… twitter.com/VirusesImmunit…

Very excited to receive the book THE LONG COVID SURVIVAL GUIDE edited by @fi_lowenstein. This book has many great insights and ‘how-to’ tips from amazing patient experts and researchers, including @PutrinoLab. Honored to contribute an afterword 🙏🏼 #MustRead #longcovid

During this pandemic, I’ve seen people using their diverse talents to explain the virus, immunity and vaccines. @KeeneRoz uses her crochet skills to create a model #SARSCoV2 so that blind people can visualize the virus and its genome (plus bonus antibody). 😍🙏🏼 #scicomm

An important new study looks at how COVID vaccines impacts symptoms in #LongCovid patients. @thitran3’s team used data from ComPaRe long COVID cohort to emulate a target trial (1:1 matched vax:unvax) measuring outcome at 120 days after baseline. (1/) papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf…

Has anyone else with #longCOVID received monoclonal antibodies to SARS-CoV-2? Please share your experience. More data will help justify a clinical trial. Thank you. twitter.com/AlisaValdesRod…
