What an incredible honor to be invited to have lunch at the @WhiteHouse by Dr. Jill Biden in honor of Mrs. Yuko Kishida, spouse of the Prime Minister of Japan. I discussed #LongCovid, nasal vaccines, and the importance of science with powerful women 🌸 asahi.com/ajw/articles/1…

What does this mean? Immune evasion from CD8 T cells could allow infected cells to survive better in the host. The virus could establish a safe niche for prolonged replication. To eliminate such persistent reservoirs, we need to employ antivirals or antibody therapy. (4/)

Our study showing that Omicron subvariants are even more capable than other VOCs in suppressing MHC I expression to evade CD8 T cell immunity is just published. Congratulations to @MiyuMoriyama @carolilucas @ValterVSM @NathanGrubaugh & team 👏🏼 👏🏼 👏🏼 (1/) pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…

We are now enrolling in the #PaxLCTrial; randomizing people with #longCOVID to 15 days of Paxlovid (nirmatrelvir/ritonavir) or placebo (placebo/ritonavir). Currently people in CT, NY, and FL can enroll. Hope to expand to other states soon. For more info 👉🏼 kindred.hugo.health/pax-lc

We suspect that a subset of #longCOVID patients have viral reservoirs. The reason we use a 15-day trx (not a 5-day used for acute infection) is to allow the drug to eliminate the virus that is causing chronic infection and to remove such reservoirs. (4/) nature.com/articles/s4159…

Very excited that our PaxLC clinical trial on #longCOVID patients is now open, led by @hmkyale! This is a phase 2, 1:1 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled research study in 100 non-hospitalized highly symptomatic long COVID. (1/) clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT05…

A very interesting paper from Dr. Mark Davis’ group shows that in response to the mRNA vaccine, CD8 T cell responses are attenuated in people who had prior COVID compared to uninfected people. What does this mean? (1/) doi.org/10.1016/j.immu…

The #LongCovidAwarenessDay (today) is important because in many countries and regions around the world, long COVID is not discussed and people are suffering in isolation. Awareness is needed to improve diagnosis, medical care, research, and support of patients 💙

“Long COVID has not received anywhere near the same level of attention or resources: the result has been widespread harm to health, societies, and economies. 3 years in, more is needed to recognise, treat, and support patients with long COVID.” 💯 thelancet.com/journals/lance…

A new study by @carolilucas lab shows that vaccine booster type matters, especially for 50 and older. After the CoronaVac primary series, BNT162b2 or ChAdOx1 booster produces better neutralizing antibodies than the CoronaVac booster. @ScienceTM science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

Thrilled to share this Comment in @TheLancetInfDis that I coauthored with the amazing @PutrinoLab on “Why we need a deeper understanding of the pathophysiology of long COVID”. Sharing an accessible document here. Thank you for reading and sharing 🙏🏼 thelancet.com/journals/lanin…

A team member working on our #PrimeandSpike nasal spray COVID booster vaccine developed #longCOVID 😭 Long COVID is a global crisis affecting millions of lives. It is impacting our ability to do science, research and development.
13
We are looking for people who never had COVID or who recovered from COVID as important control participants in our Yale LISTEN study. Please sign up if you can help us understand the pathophysiology of #longCOVID and post-vaccine adverse events 🙏🏼 medicine.yale.edu/ycci/listen-st…

Amazing, timely, comprehensive, and evidence-based review - Long COVID: major findings, mechanisms and recommendations - by @ahandvanish @LisaAMcCorkell @juliamv @EricTopol. This is a #MustRead and is already my go-to review on #LongCovid. nature.com/articles/s4157…

@sciliz I’m concerned because of the putative ability of XBB.1.5 to have increased capacity to infect cell types that express even lower levels of ACE2. This will increase tropism and possibly persistence in cell types that are long lived.
16
A very important and informative thread about why the Omicron XBB.1.5 subvariant is now dominating in the Northeast US and is expected to spread. Please protect yourselves and others by wearing N95 masks. I am truly concerned about the #longCOVID wave that follows this infection. twitter.com/yunlong_cao/st…

Our new data demonstrate the evolution of the Omicron variants in further suppressing MHC I expression and escaping detection/killing by CD8 T cells. Thus, in addition to evasion from Ab and innate immunity, MHC I ⬇️ by Omicron may further ⬆️ replication & transmission. (End)

New data are pretty striking. Compared to the ancestral (WA1) or Epsilon (B.1.429) variant, Omicron subvariants BA.1, BA.2.12.1, XAF and BA.4 all suppressed MHC I surface expression better in infected cells. An irrelevant surface marker (CD324) was not affected by infection. (4/)

A while ago, @MiyuMoriyama et al showed that SARS-CoV-2 variants suppress MHC I levels in infected cells to the same degree as the ancestral virus. Then came the Omicron variants. A short update. (1/) biorxiv.org/content/10.110… twitter.com/VirusesImmunit…

Lack of funding for the next generation COVID vaccines, including nasal spray boosters, will slow our progress in providing immunity where it’s needed - at the point of viral entry👃🏼 Thank you @VinGuptaMD @NBCNews for this news coverage! #mucosalvaccine youtu.be/aIaeRaNyFX0

My immunology lectures in @YaleMed ‘Attacks and Defenses’ course tomorrow will include discussions of post-acute infection syndromes (#PAIS) and #MECFS. So excited to be able to teach our medical students about these conditions and raise awareness of PAIS in future doctors!
22
@cstroeckw Many thanks to you and other patient advocates, this pandemic has propelled me to investigate the pathobiology of #longCOVID, #MECFS and #longLyme 🙏🏼 If enough people do the same, we can change how society and medicine view post-acute infection syndromes.

Getting ready for this town hall meeting👩🏻‍💻 I will discuss the latest results from MY-LC study with @PutrinoLab and also provide my updated hypotheses on the pathogenesis of long COVID and vaccine-related long-haul diseases based on data from the Yale LISTEN study with @hmkyale. twitter.com/kindred_health…

Delighted to host @resiapretorius and @PutrinoLab at Yale today. @ValterVSM and I learned how to image #microclots and activated platelets. Activated platelet stained with anti-CD62P antibody are evident just looking through the eyepiece 👀 This is from a #longCOVID patient👇🏽😭

Is there anything we can do to prevent long COVID, once we catch the virus? Research by @zalaly and colleagues shows that Paxlovid treatment within 5 days of a positive test led to 26% less risk of #longCOVID, regardless of vaccine status. (1/2) medrxiv.org/content/10.110…
