The giant 6 made out of blocks in Bowser's Castle in Super Mario World can kill Mario in two ways. Jumping on top of it can cause him to be pinched between two blocks, dying instantly, or he can become trapped inside the 6 with no escape, needing the timer to run out to continue.

During a brief segment of the E3 2014 Nintendo Treehouse stream, prototype Yoshi designs for Yoshi's Woolly World were shown. Note that the sheep-like "Woolly Yoshi" (right) was supposed to not be a transformation, but a concept for the regular Yoshi design.

Text seen in the background of DIC Entertainment Mario cartoons often contained misspellings. The most egregious example can be seen in the Super Mario Bros. Super Show episode "Flatbush Koopa", where a "BURGER SHOP" sign (left) changes to "BURCER SHOR" (right) in one scene.

In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, the temporary follower characters are entirely interchangeable. When brought to an event, a wrong follower will simply act like the correct one without crashing the game. Here are the Yoshi Egg acting as Frankly and Punio acting as Flavio.

Internal files for Yoshi's Island show that the original concept for Hookbill the Koopa was a Birdo/Koopa hybrid creature. Despite being consistently paired up with Yoshi in Mario spin-off games, Birdo or anything Birdo-related has never appeared in a single Yoshi game.

In Paper Mario, talking to the green Bob-omb in Kooper's house while touching the small ledge behind him may result in Mario losing the ability to do anything except slide around slowly. As he cannot open doors in this state, Mario will be trapped inside this house forever.

In the first Bowser segment in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, a portrait of Bowser can be briefly seen at an oblique angle (top left). Moving the camera shows that it has a mustache (bottom left). The same portrait appears in Super Paper Mario, entirely off-camera (right).

A 1994 Wario's Woods manga shows a glimpse of the eventual future wedding of Mario and Princess Peach. The fairy sitting on Mario's head is Wanda, the protagonist of the Japan-only Mario & Wario for the Super Famicom, who is using time magic to be present at that moment.

In Level 3 of the "Opening Night" microgame in WarioWare: Smooth Moves, Samus Aran from the Metroid series appears playing a cello (left). This is likely a reference to the NES version of Tetris, where upon reaching a high enough score, Samus also appears playing a cello (right).

In Super Mario World, when Small Mario finishes a level while riding Yoshi and shows the victory sign, the top of his head is offset by 2 pixels to the left, making his hat appear misaligned (left). In remakes and the Super Mario Maker games, this has been corrected (right).

Luigi's Mansion contains a model for an unused playable version of Mario. A barely visible irregularity on one side of his mustache is, upon closer inspection, revealed to be a triangular hole. As the model is otherwise complete, the reason for the missing polygon is unknown.

Out of all Mario Kart games that feature a mirror mode, only Mario Kart 64 does not mirror all track elements. Instead, an exemption is made so that the starting line banner still reads "MARIO KART". In all other games, the banner reads "TЯAꓘ OIЯAM" instead.

Clay model of an early concept version of Isle Delfino from Super Mario Sunshine, made by Yoshiaki Koizumi, the game's director and later producer of most major Mario titles. The only existing photo (left) is very small; I have used an upscaling algorithm to enlarge it (right).

When opening the data of Super Mario Bros. 2 in a hex editor, the word "ZELDA" can be found in plain text due to some code being copied and pasted from The Legend of Zelda. This is both the earliest and the most obscure Zelda series reference in a Mario game.

In Super Mario Odyssey, a small easily overlooked detail is that Mario leaves footprints in the carpet in the New Donk City Hall Auditorium. These are subtle and very hard to see during regular gameplay (left), but can be seen by using the Coin filter in Shapshot Mode (right).

In Super Mario Galaxy, Mario's reflection acts in the opposite way to everyone else's. Surfaces that reflect Mario reflect no other characters or objects (left), while surfaces that reflect everything else do not reflect Mario (right).

In a 1996 interview, Mario Kart 64 director Hideki Konno stated that the game was originally intended to have a "serious mode" without items, to appeal to hardcore racing fans. However, nearly all playtesters chose to play with items instead, leading to the mode being scrapped.

Level 5-3 of New Super Mario Bros. contains a unique enemy, the Snailicorn (left). Due to the game running at 240p natively, it is hard to make out the details of the model. By increasing the game's internal resolution, we can take a closer look at the Snailicorn's design.

In Super Mario Bros. 3, only one out of eight levels in Grass Land (1-2, top middle) has ground that resembles grass due to its color, while the others contain no grass. In addition, the Grass Land map has yellow ground. Worlds 3, 4 and 7 all contain more grass than Grass Land.

In one very brief shot of the Lego Super Mario trailer, a figure can be seen from afar that does not appear in the rest of the trailer or in any of the promotional photos currently released for the product. It is a Monty Mole (circled on left, close-up on right).
