In Super Mario Bros., some enemies can be turned into others when hit from below while 14 to 18 pixels away from the left edge of the screen. A Goomba will turn into a dead red Koopa Troopa; however, a Spiny will turn into a green Koopa Troopa and remain alive in its new form.

Super Mario Odyssey contains three Checkpoint Flags that are permanently missable, detailed below. If a save file is otherwise complete but displays fewer than 85 checkpoints found, it is likely that one of these was missed and the perfect score is not achievable on that file.

Mario Party 7 is the only game in the Mario Party series where a "Confirm" prompt appears after the board victory message, seemingly suggesting that the victory is still pending approval even though the character is already celebrating it.

In Super Mario World, it is possible to pick up two items at once by carefully positioning them 1 pixel apart beforehand. However, doing so is also dangerous. If the items are released while Mario is facing a wall, they will crush Mario to death.

In Super Mario Sunshine, Yoshi has a steadily emptying "Juice" meter (left). When it runs out, Yoshi briefly turns green before disintegrating. In the international versions, the meter reads "Fruit" during this (middle). In the Japanese version, it reads "Hungry" instead (right).

When choosing Bowser's Japanese name, Shigeru Miyamoto was determined to name him after a Korean dish. While he eventually settled on "Kuppa" (which was then translated internationally as Koopa), according to a 2000 interview, he also considered calling him "Yukke" and "Bibinba".

In Ludwig's Castle in Super Mario World, a room contains a descending spiked ceiling. Once the ceiling hits the ground, the sound effect for Mario's spin jump will be replaced with the sound effect for heavy objects hitting the ground until the room is exited.

Early layout documents for Super Mario Bros. show that early in development, the ground was shown at an angle from above, giving the path visual depth. This was changed to a completely 2D view in the finished game, but the idea was later used in the Donkey Kong Country series.

In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga+Bowser's Minions, a portrait of Fawful was added to Woohoo Hooniversity that was absent in the original. This adds to Fawful's backstory by suggesting he went to, and was a notable graduate of, the Hooniversity to have his portrait in the halls.

In Super Mario Galaxy, walking into this corner in the Honeyhive Galaxy while crouching and then jumping will cause Mario to be stuck in his jumping pose. As long as Z is held, Mario will slide around the ground in that pose instead of walking normally.

In Donkey Kong 64, the final 201st Golden Banana has a special failsafe mechanism when its room is entered ahead of time through glitches: it fades out upon being approached. This is unique; all other 200 Golden Bananas can be collected at any time if they can be accessed.

Whenever Blooper Babies appear in official artwork, they are depicted with eyes identical to adult Bloopers. In-game, they are very small, making it difficult to tell, but zooming in on them or extracting their models shows that they have blank white eyes with no pupils instead.

In Super Mario Galaxy 2, Mario's prompt for interacting with NPCs is "(A) Talk" (left). However, if due to any error during the game's runtime, the NPC cannot load a valid message, the prompt changes to "(A) Read" instead (right). Attempting to "read" an NPC crashes the game.

In Super Mario Odyssey, if A is pressed on a specific frame while climbing this ledge in the Cap Kingdom, Mario will be stuck walking in place forever and not accept any further input, forcing the game to be reset.

Opening up the Star Fox SNES cartridge reveals that the Super FX 3D graphics chip is actually called "MARIO CHIP" as printed on the unit. This is an acronym for "Mathematical Argonaut Rotation & Input/Output" (Argonaut being the name of the studio that developed the chip).

In New Super Mario Bros., whenever Small Mario ducks, the lower part of his torso deforms in such a way that it goes below ground, lower than Mario's feet. The internal resolution of the game has been increased in the attached screenshots for clearer view.

As seen on a surviving background planning sheet from the development of Super Mario Bros., the message displayed in a Warp Zone was first written as "Welcome to Warp Zoon!" by the original designer, before the last word was corrected to "Zone" by a different designer.
