In Super Mario 64, the floating boxes above the elevator in Hazy Maze Cave are at a precise height where, if the edges of the elevator are aligned with them, Mario can bypass them by briefly getting squished into the gap.

In Super Mario Bros., after beating a castle level, Mario always starts the next world by exiting from that castle, except in 5-1. This suggests the 5-1 seen in the finished game was not the original concept for the level, and was moved to that spot later. Details in image.

In Chapter 3 of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Mario discovers two characters after their life was drained from them. Bandy Andy has a pained expression. However, when spoken to, he says he thinks he won't make it, during which he briefly changes to a happy expression.

Development data for Super Mario 64 contains an early version of MIPS the rabbit, which was colored pink. Unlike the finished game's MIPS, this version had the uncanny-looking ability to turn its head backwards 180 degrees, similar to an owl, to see Mario approaching from behind.

In Super Mario World, it is normally impossible to die during the bonus roulette minigame. However, if glitches are used to do so and Mario loses his last life, the resulting "GAME OVER" screen will be glitched, spelling out something resembling "MFii[N IERIL" instead.

In Super Mario Bros., if a Red Koopa Paratroopa is stomped twice in the manner shown in the footage, instead of falling, its shell will be suspended in mid-air. After a few seconds, it will emerge from its shell and start walking on air.

While it may appear like the backgrounds in Super Mario Bros. are made out of individually placed elements, there are in fact only 3 different pre-made backgrounds, seen in levels 1-1, 1-3 and 2-1. By changing a single byte in the game's code, any level can assume any background.

In Paper Mario: The Origami King, there is a room where Professor Toad tells Mario "Don't leave without me!" Contrary to expectations, using glitches to do that does not result in Professor Toad being absent - instead, the game overcompensates and spawns two Professor Toads.

The kiosk demo for Mario Kart DS only had a few playable tracks, but contained unused early versions of additional tracks. The early version of Delfino Square features a fountain depicting a Yoshi spewing out water. This was changed to a Pianta statue in the finished game.

In Super Mario Sunshine, walking into the space between the slot machines in Casino Delfino will cause random parts of Mario's model to oscillate uncontrollably. He is actually walking extremely quickly and being displaced back on every frame; the rattling sound is his footsteps.

During a visit to Frankfurt, Germany in 2004, a correspondent of the British NGC magazine has asked randomly chosen German citizens on the street to draw Mario and Yoshi; he mentions that to his surprise, most people knew the characters in question. Here are their drawings.

The Wii can sometimes read a low-charge Wii Remote battery as being at 0% charge despite still functioning. If this happens in Super Mario Galaxy 2, the low battery warning will remain on the screen forever - even after replacing the battery - until the game is reset.

A 2010 article from Edge Magazine that called the Mario franchise "the Citizen Kane of gaming" included three illustrations of shots from the 1941 movie Citizen Kane altered to be Mario-related (top row). The original shots are included in the bottom row for comparison.

A 1994 Nintendo "Play it Loud" commercial featured a graffiti wall of Nintendo characters. While the wall is never seen in full, the parts that appear show that it contained Yoshi and Mario with sunglasses, as well as Kirby with a gold chain.

Last September, I posted about the leg count difference between the official art of Wiggler from Super Mario RPG (top left) and his sprite (bottom left). As it turns out, the sprite is instead based on rare scrapped pre-release art, seen in the British Superplay magazine (right).

Texture of the hidden Luigi portrait from World 5-4 of New Super Luigi U, extracted from the game's data. I have previously posted this in 2017; however, the extraction process at the time was imperfect and resulted in distortions in the image. This version is an accurate rip.

To commemorate the inclusion of King K. Rool in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, here is a scene of King K. Rool receiving a celebratory cake from a manga based on the Donkey Kong Country cartoon.

The Japanese official Super Mario 64 trading card for the Mother Penguin shows her in the middle of a blinking animation for an unknown reason, making her seem to have a bored or annoyed expression that she never actually displays in-game.

In the fourth mission of Pinna Park in Super Mario Sunshine, there is a single banana bunch floating extremely high above the beach. The image on the right shows the distance (skybox disabled for clearer view; the yellow dot near the top is the banana bunch).

In Super Mario 64, most stairs are coded correctly, with Mario standing on the steps (left). However, the central staircase in the castle lobby is actually just a ramp using staircase graphics, leading to Mario floating between steps. The shadow reveals the true shape (right).

In Super Mario Odyssey, whenever characters dance or bob to the music, the speed of their animations will change depending on the tempo of the music track currently playing. Note the Jammin' Toad bobbing much faster when a more lively track is played.
