The Wheel Slug is a friendly character cut from Wario Land: Shake It that would have been used by Wario to ride along rails. It has animations for transforming from a slug into a wheel and back. In the finished game, it was replaced with a vehicle called the Unibucket (right).

The text graphics for Super Mario World contain the word "ILLUSIYELLOW" among the alphabet tiles. This word is actually used for a clever trick that allows the game to bypass level name length limitations by squeezing in one extra character. Details in image.

In Super Mario Galaxy, whenever Mario touches dark matter, he dissolves into dust. However, a few frames before the dissolving animation begins, Mario's model loses its hands and most of its face. This can actually be seen in-game, although only from afar. Here it is zoomed in.

In the Super Mario 64 demo playable at the Shoshinkai 1995 trade show, Mario's triple jump put him into a twirling state, making him descend slowly. This was cut from the finished game, but was reused in Super Mario 64 DS for Luigi's backflip, which makes him twirl the same way.

During normal gameplay, enemies in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door will at most have a few status effects at a time. However, the game supports anyone having nearly every status effect in the game at once, which creates a stack of icons that breaches the top of the screen.

In Yoshi's Island, almost all levels have an elaborate color gradient set as the furthest background layer - including those where it is never visible due to other layers covering it. Here are examples of the levels as they normally appear and the hidden gradients in them.

The three Bowser minigames in Mario Party 4 start the same way to keep players guessing until Bowser reveals the name. However, in Fruits of Doom (last 2 images), Bowser's face is more yellowish than usual for an unknown reason, giving away the nature of the minigame in advance.

An addendum to the post about Small Yoshi: twitter.com/MarioBrothBlog… Super Mario Run is also the only appearance of Small Daisy. However, until now, her model has never been extracted. I was approached by Twitter user @El_Libre_, who has generously offered to extract the data.

Normally, Toads do not have necks (left). However, in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, the model for the Propeller Toads has a fully modeled and textured neck, unlike all other Toad models (right). In-game, the neck is pushed into the head and is not visible (middle).

In Super Mario Bros. 3, hitting a regular Note Block after jumping on a Red Note Block will cause Mario to endlessly switch between rooms, requiring the game to be reset. This also shows that the decorative background items are randomly generated every time the room is loaded.

On the title screen of Mario Paint, clicking the "R" plays a sound. That sound is actually a voice saying "Odnetnin", or "Nintendo" backwards. The footage below first plays the clip normally, then reverses it, and finally slows it down to hear the original "Nintendo" voice.

In Super Mario Galaxy, penguins that are far away from the camera only blink with the eye that is turned towards Mario. If Mario is looking directly at them, they blink normally, but if Mario can only see one of their eyes, they wink with that eye instead.

A 1995 officially licensed Mario quiz card featured an Inca sun in a Mario style. By coincidence, it looks similar to the Shine Sprites from Super Mario Sunshine, which appeared 7 years later; particularly a hypothetical "Grand" variant, analogous to Grand Stars.

In Super Mario Galaxy 2, the Starshroom appears near Starship Mario after reaching Spin-Dig Galaxy. However, even before that, one of the Toad Brigade members is already present: Banktoad can be seen floating in mid-air above Starship Mario from the beginning of the game.
