In Super Mario 64, the mushroom platforms in Tall, Tall Mountain have faulty collision that manifests in angle-dependent invisible walls. If Mario approaches them at a precise angle, he will hit an invisible wall that is not normally there.

The North American commercial for Yoshi's Island DS contains an original 3D model of Baby Donkey Kong that is visible for less than 2 seconds during one scene. The model is distinct from the model later used in Mario Super Sluggers by having a smaller mouth.

In the Mario Classic Court in Mario Power Tennis, Fighter Flies appear as 2D sprites from the Mario Bros. arcade (top left). In the data is an unused 3D model for the Fighter Fly (right), which would have been its only 3D appearance. It is based on its GBA design (bottom left).

At the end of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Mario can agree to serve the Shadow Queen. In most versions, this makes him look angry (left). However, in the Japanese version, he assumes the sprite Doopliss uses when impersonating him, signifying becoming evil (right).

In Super Mario Odyssey, Mario's panting animation does not interact correctly with him looking upward. Standing next to an object of interest at low health, Mario will constantly try to look away from it, only to have his head be jerked back to the object.

The US version of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga cannot properly handle if the sum of all damage dealt to some bosses in a turn exceeds 5000 (possible at very high levels). For example, doing it to Hermie III causes him to explode while leaving his claws behind, freezing the game.

At a 2002 Nintendo press event, early footage of Super Mario Sunshine was shown; however, no cameras were permitted. A correspondent of the British NGC Magazine drew sketches of what he saw in the footage; notably, a talking Yoshi NPC. In the finished game, Yoshis do not talk.

According to the Art of Super Mario Odyssey book, the Moon Kingdom and Bowser's Kingdom were originally intended to be one location, so that instead of having a separate "Japanese castle" and "moon" levels, the theme was "Japanese castle on the moon".

In Super Paper Mario, red lycoris flowers can be seen in Sammer's Kingdom. In Japanese culture, they symbolize death and mourning, and are said to bloom when seeing someone for the last time. This may be foreshadowing of Sammer's Kingdom being obliterated during the game's story.

In the Nintendo Switch version of Miitopia, there is an NPC that wears various Mario character costumes (left). In the code (right), the costumes are saved with wildly mismatched parts, which are then resized at runtime to normal size when the Mii is displayed.

Due to the Goomba's Shoe item being known as "Kuribo's Shoe" at the time of Super Mario Bros. 3's release, an issue of Nintendo Power calls a Shoe Goomba "Kuribo's Goomba". As "Kuribo" is the Japanese name for Goomba, this translates to "Goomba's Goomba".

In the Super Mario Maker series, Winged Stretches switch between the upper and lower side of platforms. The time they take to switch depends on how many blocks of ground they must travel through. This can be used to surprise the player by placing them under very tall platforms.

Both Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and Super Paper Mario contain remnants of a design concept for Princess Peach with shorter hair; seen on Peach's chapter intro medallion in the former and found as an unused quick edit of the sprite in the data of the latter.

In Super Mario Sunshine, Mario can clip through a corner in the Blooper race track in Ricco Harbor, whereupon it is revealed that the track is floating in space, like the secret courses. Once out of bounds, Mario can run around in space, but can never return to the track.

In the Japanese version of Paper Mario: The Origami King, the Whispering Woods is called "デクの山" (Deku Mountain) and Ol' Grandsappy is called "デクじい" (Grandfather Deku). This is a reference to the similarly elderly and mustachioed Deku Tree from the Legend of Zelda series.

In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Goombella often has special tattle messages for NPCs in extraordinary circumstances. However, sometimes she does not; here, when Shellshock eats the poisoned cake in Chapter 3, Goombella says he "seems to be totally on top of his game".

In Paper Mario: The Origami King, the Vellumentals are deities that have been folded into origami (left). While their unfolded forms are not shown in gameplay, the Water Vellumental's original form can be seen in the concept art gallery (right, extracted from the game's files).

While Waluigi is already the tallest regular human Mario character, he would appear even taller if he was standing up straight. Here is a comparison between the heights of his usual stance and a stance with good posture using the Mario character size reference chart.

In Super Mario Maker 2, whenever Pom Pom takes damage, she briefly gains extra fingers on both hands (left and middle). This is likely due to her model being imported from Super Mario 3D World, where she has two hand variations, and those two being loaded simultaneously (right).
