In the Super Mario Maker games, a Goomba trapped between blocks will send undulating waves of direction changes up the stack it is carrying. This can be used to create towers of cannons that each shoot left or right in an unpredictable manner.

In Super Mario 64, falling into sand or snow from a great height gets Mario stuck. However, the geometry of the courses that contain them also mistakenly designates some other surfaces as sand or snow, resulting in Mario being able to get stuck in stone or ice.

In Super Mario 64, if Mario throws a Chuckya off a ledge and then jumps after it, and if the Chuckya happens to grab him on the frame it explodes, Mario will be stuck in mid-air. The "exit course" option will not appear in the pause menu, forcing the game to be reset to continue.

When creating the Skeeter enemy in Super Mario 64, the designers overlooked that the game's mechanics make a water surface-based enemy completely ineffectual. Since Mario automatically recovers health on water surfaces, all damage dealt by a Skeeter is immediately undone.

In Super Mario 64, jumping onto this ledge in the lobby of Peach's Castle may cause Mario to become trapped in a perpetual stumbling state. Since Mario cannot move and the castle pause menu does not have an option to exit the level, the game must be reset to continue playing.
