In Super Mario Sunshine, airplanes can sometimes be seen flying through the sky in various levels, leaving long contrails. However, there is also a "ghost plane". It is only visible in the mirrors on Gelato Beach (left), but is absent in reality (right).

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, if Bowser picks up a Smash Ball and then performs a backwards double jump, the Smash Ball-specific texture of his eyes will detach from his actual eyes, resulting in an additional pair of eyes floating above the shell (indicated with red arrows).

In the E3 2019 Nintendo Treehouse gameplay of Luigi's Mansion 3, it was shown that the game's goal is to collect elevator buttons, one for each floor of the hotel. For a few frames in the game's trailer, the elevator panel is visible, revealing that the game will have 17 levels.

Internal files for Yoshi's Island contain two title screen logos from 1993, two years before the game's release, reading "MONSTER PARK" and "SUPER YOSSY". These were likely some of the earliest names considered for the game. Here they are overlaid over the game's title screen.

The amount of animation frames for Luigi in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (including where Mario is part of the sprite, such as when Luigi holds Mario) is the highest for any character in any Mario game, with 14836 individual frames. Below are all of them, at 1/13th the resolution.

Illustration of Luigi despondently feeding Mario a P-Balloon from a Japanese guide for Super Mario Kart. P-Balloons do not appear in Super Mario Kart.

The licensed Mario product with the earliest copyright date is this 1982 Jumpman/Mario doll that shows a copyright of 1978. Since Shigeru Miyamoto only invented the character in 1981, this should logically be impossible; the company simply reused tags from an earlier toy.

Title screen and all Mario sprites from the PC demo for Super Mario Bros. 3, submitted to Nintendo in 1990 by id Software, makers of the Doom and Quake franchises. Nintendo turned down all collaboration with id, citing they had no interest in Mario games being available on PC.

The files for Yoshi's Woolly World include a test room that contains three decorative scenes: three Shy Guys talking, a Shy Guy toasting marshmallows with a gnome character, and a Shy Guy lying on the ground, alone.

A sketch of Mario wearing Madame Broode's outfit is presented in the Art of Super Mario Odyssey book without context or description, the only caption being "Incredible impact!" It is unknown if this was planned to be a costume or an actual power-up able to use the Chain Chomp.

Rosalina's design contains an oddity in Mario Golf: Super Rush. Despite using a wand to magically levitate her club, she is wearing a golf glove. During gameplay, she never touches the club (or any other item) with her gloved hand, making the glove completely superfluous.

In Mother 2, the Japanese version of Earthbound, selecting "Don't Care" six times during character creation will give the party Mario-themed names: Ness becomes Mario, Paula becomes Peach, Jeff becomes Luigi, Poo becomes Toad, and King becomes Yoshi.

Due to the small size of Wario's irises, his eye color appears to be black from a distance, and has been depicted as such in the past. However, more modern renders and textures are now detailed enough to reveal that he actually has blue eyes, like Mario.

In the GBA version of Donkey Kong Country 3, Lanky Kong appears in a minigame, using these four sprites. This is the only time Lanky Kong appeared in a two-dimensional form, and these are the only Lanky Kong sprites in existence.

In the late 1980s, select officially licensed Super Mario Bros. merchandise used bizarre artwork depicting Mario with an evil expression and Princess Peach as a small child. The highest-quality version of this image was used on this 1989 promotional Nintendo Cereal System poster.

In Super Mario Maker 2, Music Blocks have unique sounds for objects that cannot be directly placed in the editor or cannot normally activate the blocks. This footage gives a few examples: shell-less Koopas, Bowser's falling flames and a 10-coin, which needs a POW Block to fall.

The closest Mario can get to the camera in Super Mario Sunshine is inside a house in Delfino Plaza. This allows us to see that although Mario's eye textures have been updated in the Super Mario 3D All-Stars version (right), his irises still extend past the edges of his eyes.

In Super Mario Advance 2, if Mario has 999 lives and exits a level as Yoshi is swallowing a 1-Up Mushroom on the first frame the "1-Up" text appears (left), upon returning to the map screen, Mario will have "Y00" lives (right). This resets back to 999 when entering a level.

In the Japanese version of Luigi's Mansion, Luigi whistles when entering the final room, where Mario is held captive. This was removed in all other versions since it would be uncharacteristically nonchalant for Luigi to whistle while Mario is pleading for help in front of him.

In Super Mario Odyssey, reentering a completed side area causes Cappy to comment on it (left). However, if Mario enters it without Cappy, the message still appears, but in a smaller font (right), representing Cappy's voice coming from outside the area.

According to internal filenames, the Luigi ghost that challenges the player in Super Mario Galaxy 2 is not actually Luigi, as all his files refer to him as Mario, even ones blatantly using Luigi's assets. Note that the actual Luigi's files refer to him as Luigi.

In a new gameplay clip seen on Nintendo of Japan's official website for Paper Mario: The Origami King, Birdo can be seen flying in the far background for a few frames. Whether this is merely an Easter egg or Birdo has a more important role is not yet known.
