Although this is hidden by the objects they are holding, the three Marios in the title screen of Super Mario 3D All-Stars are each showing one of the Rock-Paper-Scissors hand signs, completing the set. The hand poses can be seen within the respective games.

Normally, Toads do not have necks (left). However, in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, the model for the Propeller Toads has a fully modeled and textured neck, unlike all other Toad models (right). In-game, the neck is pushed into the head and is not visible (middle).

A few days ago, I have posted about an unexplained glitch that results in characters assuming a T-pose in Mario Party 4. Since then, I have been researching the glitch and was able to reproduce it, as well as compile the steps needed for it to occur. Details below.

In Super Mario Sunshine, when Mario turns around while balancing on a rope, he will make a brief "whoa" noise. However, if the Control Stick is held perpendicularly to the rope, Mario will continuously make these noises while remaining completely still.

In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga+Bowser's Minions, a portrait of Fawful was added to Woohoo Hooniversity that was absent in the original. This adds to Fawful's backstory by suggesting he went to, and was a notable graduate of, the Hooniversity to have his portrait in the halls.

Super Mario 64 uses an inventive camera trick to hide a rendering limitation in Big Boo's Haunt. In this room, the default camera is fixed to perfectly align the bars on the window with the door behind it. Only by entering first-person view can we see that the door is missing.

In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, the Thunder Bros. move will lower an enemy's defense. However, as a result of a glitch, failing the move on purpose will make it immensely powerful, completely nullifying the enemy's defense instead. Details in image.

In Super Mario Galaxy, after performing a Homing Ground Pound (spin, then Ground Pound), Mario's blinking animation will become glitched until he moves again. In addition to closing his eyes for a long time, he will use both regular blinking and "eyes closed in pain" textures.

This drawing from an ad for the Mario Bros. Game & Watch is the earliest publicly released depiction of Luigi, as it predates the Game & Watch, which in turn predates his official debut in the Mario Bros. arcade. Unfortunately, it is impossible to tell which of the men is Luigi.

In New Super Mario Bros. U/Deluxe, standing still near one of the small yellow butterflies will make it land on the character. For the Toads and Luigi, the butterfly will land on their mouths; for Mario, it will land on his nose. The butterfly will never land on Nabbit.

The final Super Mario World manga, released in 1992, takes place after the events of Super Mario World. Here, Yoshi has officially become part of the Mario Bros. and has received his own yellow cap with a "Y" emblem. Unfortunately, no such cap has ever appeared in any games.

I have discovered what I believe is one of the most obscure references in a Mario game: the character Mattel from The Legendary Starfy 4 appears for a single frame in a rare animation at an extremely small resolution in Super Princess Peach. Details in image.

In Paper Mario: The Origami King, the Vellumentals are deities that have been folded into origami (left). While their unfolded forms are not shown in gameplay, the Water Vellumental's original form can be seen in the concept art gallery (right, extracted from the game's files).

In Super Mario 64, sliding near a baby penguin will make it slide, as well. If Mario is trapped in a sliding animation, it is revealed that the penguin will keep sliding for as long as Mario is sliding. In addition, if it crosses the edge of the pond, it will jump while sliding.

Unused scene from the North American commercial for Mario Party 4, depicting Yoshi's, Peach's and Luigi's reaction to Mario skiing from a roof. In the broadcast version of the commercial, this scene was replaced with a cut to the game's logo and a crashing sound.

In Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, a glitch can be used to sell any item for the regular selling price of any other (potentially much more expensive) item, allowing immense amounts of profit to be made. Details in image.

In Super Mario 64, entering the Lakitu/Stop camera mode, holding R and pressing C-Up allows Mario's head to be moved like in first-person view. Moving his head down and to the side reveals that his nose clips through his arm, which cannot be seen in regular first-person view.

Clearing the Special Zone in Super Mario World provides an extra bit of added difficulty. Normally, Buzzy Beetles shake before starting to move after being stunned. However, after beating the Special Zone, they start to move without shaking, providing no warning to the player.

According to internal filenames, the Luigi ghost that challenges the player in Super Mario Galaxy 2 is not actually Luigi, as all his files refer to him as Mario, even ones blatantly using Luigi's assets. Note that the actual Luigi's files refer to him as Luigi.

A series of 1986 Super Mario Bros. manga featured a design for Princess Peach that was roughly based on her sprite as seen at the end of Super Mario Bros. (insert, middle).

Close-up look at the artwork found only on the Super Leaf pouch sold exclusively at the Nintendo Tokyo store. While Tanooki Mario uses pre-existing artwork, Kitsune Luigi, Tanooki Peach and Tanooki Toad are original drawings.

In Snowman's Land in Super Mario 64, a coin is mistakenly placed inside a wall. However, by shooting Mario out of a cannon in a precise spot, it can still be collected (note the coin collecting sound and the coin counter increasing after Mario hits the wall).

A series of 1992 Mario pachinko game rewards from Japan has a particular focus on Blue Baby Yoshi, containing a Blue Baby Yoshi pool toy, Blue and Yellow Baby Yoshi erasers and a pin of Mario throwing a Blue Baby Yoshi into the air with the caption "FUTURE WORLD".
