In the first episode of Pinna Park in Super Mario Sunshine, there is a fixed-camera scene where the park director talks to Mario. If hacks are used to explore the area during this, it is revealed that two Nokis are missing their shells, appearing as floating heads and limbs.

The high-resolution render of the Dungeon Map item from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time contains the word "Mario" in Hylian script, as part of a reference to Mario Club, Nintendo's testing and debugging division. Details in image.

In a 2013 Iwata Asks interview, Yoshiaki Koizumi, director and producer of many Mario titles, notes the development team was "in tears" when Luigi was originally cut from Super Mario 64. 24 years later, Luigi's data was finally found, reuniting him with the game (right).

At the end of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Mario can agree to serve the Shadow Queen. In most versions, this makes him look angry (left). However, in the Japanese version, he assumes the sprite Doopliss uses when impersonating him, signifying becoming evil (right).

In Super Mario Odyssey, Peach's outfit worn in the Lake and Seaside Kingdoms includes sunglasses as an accessory on top of her head; however, she never puts them on her face. By editing the model, we can see what Peach would look like actually wearing the sunglasses.

The manual for Super Mario Bros. 2 states that Clawgrip "grows suddenly", although he never grows in-game at all. In the Super Mario Advance version, however, he starts out as a small Sidestepper crab and then grows, finally fulfilling the manual description 13 years later.

In nearly all regions, the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate box art contains Yoshi. However, to comply with German ratings mark guidelines, he was removed completely from the German version. This is the only version that sacrificed a character instead of simply repositioning the cast.

In Luigi's Mansion, Luigi's nose bounces as he walks. To achieve this, the nose is a separate mesh from his face and is detachable. While nose bounce physics return in Super Mario Odyssey, this is the only instance of Mario's/Luigi's nose being modeled separately in this manner.

The Bob-omb next to the cannon on Bob-omb Battlefield in Super Mario 64 has unique behavior. It will ignore Mario until he kills it. Upon respawning, it will get caught on a ledge, oscillate and walk off the cliff, whereupon it will ignore Mario again if he approaches it.

In Super Mario Sunshine, worried Toads are only worried when Mario approaches, and smile when he is far away. This was not visible in the original release due to the resolution, but the increased fidelity of the Super Mario 3D All-Stars version allows this to be seen on console.

In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, the partner primers refer to all partners in third person, except for Ms. Mowz, whose primer is in first person (right). This could either be an oversight or a hint that Ms. Mowz is the one narrating all the primers.

According to Bob Hoskins, who played Mario in the 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie, he was injured multiple times during filming. Among others, he says he was stabbed four times, electrocuted, broke a finger, and nearly drowned.

The closest Mario can get to the camera in Super Mario Sunshine is inside a house in Delfino Plaza. This allows us to see that although Mario's eye textures have been updated in the Super Mario 3D All-Stars version (right), his irises still extend past the edges of his eyes.

In Super Mario Galaxy, Mario's silhouette is visible whenever he is obscured by a wall. This is not Mario's actual model made visible through the wall, but a separate entity (called "MarioShadow" internally) that is loaded at all times. Details in image.

The Art of Super Mario Odyssey book contains concept art for Bowser's minions attending his wedding. In the finished game, to give the wedding a more depressing atmosphere, Bowser's cheering minions are absent and the only guests are random citizens who do not wish to be there.

An extremely detailed 2018 Waluigi render shows that the "Γ" emblem on his hat is a sticker, as a corner is peeling off. This suggests that unlike Mario, Luigi and Wario, who have tailored caps, Waluigi was only able to afford a cap with a blank emblem that he customized himself.

In Super Mario 64, the eel is never seen leaving the sunken ship in Jolly Roger Bay: it is either inside it or swimming around. By holding C-Up to force the camera to look down while swimming away, we can see the eel simply teleports out of the ship once Mario is far enough away.

In Paper Mario: The Origami King, Bobby's line about amnesia actually contains two references. In addition to the more obvious Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic reference, the words "ambrosia" and "amnesty" are a reference to a line said by Gulliver in Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

Super Mario Odyssey suggests that the Ground Pound symbol originates with the lost ancient civilization of the Lost Kingdom. As the symbol is most prominent in the Super Mario Galaxy games, this implies they moved to space. Speculation over which species it could be is included.

The only three environmental textures that have been actually redrawn in the Super Mario 3D All-Stars version of Super Mario 64 are the Boo paintings and the Bowser sliding puzzle. All others, like the Hazy Maze Cave map on the right, use AI upscaling, making the texture blurry.

In the US version of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, a glitch can cause EXP to be awarded for defeating Bowletta if she is dealt over 5000 damage. If Mario levels up during this, the Time Bob-omb will knock him out of the level-up window, unintentionally breaking the fourth wall.

In the Tall, Tall Mountain slide in Super Mario 64, several glitches can work together to create a shortcut. If C-Up is pressed as Mario starts sliding, he will gain speed, get caught on a wall, reverse, fall off a track segment that fails to load, and can skip most of the slide.

In Paper Mario: The Origami King, Bowser Jr. can actually briefly join Mario in battle. Mario must say "no" when he offers to give him a lift, then enter a battle in Shangri-Spa. Despite being completely skippable, Bowser Jr. is tied for the strongest companion alongside Bowser.

In Paper Mario, Herringway is coded as a regular penguin with a custom sprite. By pausing the game before the mayor cutscene, Herringway will load in a "depersonalized" state, appearing as a regular penguin (left: normal, middle: depersonalized). This will crash the game (right).
