In Luigi's Mansion, the portrait ghost Neville is seen reading a book (top left). While too blurry to say for certain, the texture for the book (bottom left) seems to depict Mario's head and the words "Mario Story". This could be a reference to the Japanese name for Paper Mario.

While the character section in Game & Watch manuals usually attempts to be detailed (Super Mario Bros., left); the Mario the Juggler manual is unusually succinct and has the following description for Mario: "Mario Juggles."

While Mario's nose is always modeled as part of his face, Wario is often modeled with his nose as a separate mesh. What this means is that his face is first fully modeled with skin covering the nose area as shown here before the nose is superimposed onto his face.

In the data of Super Mario Maker, early unused sprites of the Stretch enemy can be found in three of the four game styles. The sprites suggest they were intended to have two states, like regular Boos. This was later added to the nighttime Ground theme in Super Mario Maker 2.

In the underground power plant in New Donk City in Super Mario Odyssey, there is a very large piece of graffiti on a side wall that is barely legible due to the texture's opacity being set to 50%. Here is the image extracted from the game's data with maximum contrast.

Concept art of a "Yoshi Suit" power-up for Mario, showcased at the Nintendo World Store in New York in 2015. Unfortunately, due to the sheet being exhibited without additional commentary, it is unknown what exact game the power-up was envisioned for.

In Super Mario World, climbing down this long rope in Cheese Bridge Area causes it to exhibit a "magnetic pull" on Mario. He will be pulled along with it even if he tries to walk away, and can only escape by applying enough force, such as by dashing.

In Super Mario Bros. 3, only one out of eight levels in Grass Land (1-2, top middle) has ground that resembles grass due to its color, while the others contain no grass. In addition, the Grass Land map has yellow ground. Worlds 3, 4 and 7 all contain more grass than Grass Land.

As pointed out by reader @ChiefNeif, the gun is used as a reflection texture for the golf club, being so stretched out that it is not recognizable in-game. However, it is still unclear where the gun image comes from or why it was chosen for this purpose. twitter.com/ChiefNeif/stat…

The Japanese title for DK: King of Swing is "ぶらぶらドンキー", translating to "Hanging Donkey" or "Dangling Donkey". This is the only time he was referred to simply as "Donkey" in a game title without including the "Kong".

Level 5-Airship in New Super Luigi U features a wooden Luigi figurehead on the first ship. Removing that texture reveals that hidden beneath it is another, very slightly darker wooden Luigi figurehead.

It is possible, although very difficult, to collect 30 of a fruit that is not melons in a level in Yoshi's Story. This can be done by strategically using Heart Fruit to turn 18 enemies into the desired fruit. The drawing in the level ending animation changes accordingly.

In Luigi's Mansion, after scanning the dresses in the Wardrobe Room, Luigi briefly considers wearing them before deciding against it.

In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, the textures for Luigi's cap and his L emblem are stored separately, to prevent the L from being mirrored with the rest of the model when Luigi turns. Even with this precaution, one instance of the L flipping slipped past the developers.

Both Super Mario Maker (top row) and Super Mario Odyssey (bottom row) contain sprites of a mustached Bowser carrying Peach in the style of Super Mario Bros., but drawn slightly differently. Here is a comparison of the two. Super Mario Odyssey also includes a unique "skid" pose.

The animated stickers featured on Nintendo's official LINE account are drawn to have every frame resemble official 2D Mario artwork as closely as possible. Here are the very few singular frames where characters are drawn in a nonstandard manner.

Art Academy for the Nintendo DS contains a drawing of a plush Yoshi in the lower right portion of its cover. Here is a high-resolution scan of the drawing. Despite being featured on the cover, it does not appear in the game.

The 8-Bit Mario Cap outfit in Super Mario Odyssey (right) is based on the Super Mario Bros. 30th Anniversary 8-Bit Mario Modern Color amiibo (left). However, the model is not entirely faithful: there is a pixel missing from the tip of Mario's mustache, directly under his eye.

In Mario Kart: Super Circuit, whenever Yoshi wins a race and waves towards the camera, a single dark pixel can be seen above Yoshi for exactly 5 frames (top). This pixel is in fact part of Yoshi's animation, which can be seen in sprite data extracted from the files (bottom).
