A small detail in Mario Kart 8/Deluxe that is very hard to see in-game: while other tires are branded with "Mario Kart" or "Mario Motors", the Cushion Tires are branded with "Lemmy's", a reference to both the Lemmy's Tire Service signs on many tracks and to his circus aesthetic.

Completing the Special World in Super Mario World results in, among other changes, some enemies assuming alternate forms (left column). However, two forms were added exclusively to the Super Mario Advance 2 version that were absent from the original (middle and right columns).

In Super Mario Bros. 2, if a Subspace door is positioned over a patch of grass and the player character plucks it quickly after exiting Subspace, the plucked object will be worn on the character's head instead of carried. Details in image.

Pre-release screenshots of Super Mario RPG suggest that Knife Guy and Grate Guy were intended to have much more prominent roles in the game, as they are shown being fought at the very beginning of the game, and Knife Guy is shown in the overworld putting on a show for a crowd.

In Super Mario Galaxy, the bubble generators in Bubble Breeze Galaxy have unused settings to create cubic and octahedral bubbles. As the galaxy's internal name is "CubeBubbleEx", the cube was likely the original intended shape before being replaced with traditional round bubbles.

In Level 3 of the "Opening Night" microgame in WarioWare: Smooth Moves, Samus Aran from the Metroid series appears playing a cello (left). This is likely a reference to the NES version of Tetris, where upon reaching a high enough score, Samus also appears playing a cello (right).

Rare officially licensed 1990 Super Mario Bros. 3 T-shirt depicting Mario swatting away King Koopa's fireball with his hand. In the game, Mario has no way of deflecting fire attacks; the first time he was able to do this using just his fists was in Super Mario Galaxy in 2007.

Other games that feature the Luigi's Mansion mansion (top left: Super Smash Bros. Brawl, bottom left: Mario Power Tennis) show the back as a simple wall. This is inaccurate with respect to how it looks in Luigi's Mansion (right), where it has a large rear section with a balcony.

In Super Mario Bros. 2, a POW Block and the end-of-level Crystal Ball are found in the same room in 1-3. Dropping the POW Block next to the Crystal Ball makes it ascend. Picking it up near the ceiling causes the character to fall through the floor and become stuck indefinitely.
