In Super Mario Advance 4, running out of invincibility causes Mario's sprite to lose some of its saturation, appearing "washed-out". Below is Mario's sprite before, during, and after collecting a Super Star item. The effect lasts indefinitely until Mario changes rooms or forms.

The kiosk demo for Mario Kart DS only had a few playable tracks, but contained unused early versions of additional tracks. The early version of Delfino Square features a fountain depicting a Yoshi spewing out water. This was changed to a Pianta statue in the finished game.

In Super Mario Galaxy 2, if Yoshi stands very close to the large fruit in Yoshi Star Galaxy when eating it (top left), he can jump into the Launch Star that appears after with the fruit still in his mouth, resulting in him keeping his eating model for the Launch Star cutscene.

In Super Mario Sunshine, whenever Mario enters a level through an "M" portal, his model undergoes an increasing amount of distortion for 10 frames before bursting into bubbles and flying through the portal. Here is a close up of the last frame before Mario disintegrates.

In Super Mario World, Iggy Koopa's hair is slicked back; however, this is the result of an error giving him Larry's hair. The hair in the correct graphics points forward. In his appearance in the SMW style of Super Mario Maker 2, his hair is based on the unused correct hair.

The US version of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga cannot properly handle if the sum of all damage dealt to some bosses in a turn exceeds 5000 (possible at very high levels). For example, doing it to Hermie III causes him to explode while leaving his claws behind, freezing the game.

Despite being featured in the major cutscenes of Super Mario Galaxy, the UFO that abducts Peach's Castle does not actually exist in the game. These scenes are video files that are not rendered in-engine; the UFO does not appear in gameplay and its model is not found in the data.

Due to the Goomba's Shoe item being known as "Kuribo's Shoe" at the time of Super Mario Bros. 3's release, an issue of Nintendo Power calls a Shoe Goomba "Kuribo's Goomba". As "Kuribo" is the Japanese name for Goomba, this translates to "Goomba's Goomba".

In Yoshi's Woolly World, Little Mousers appear to be made entirely from yarn, as most other enemies (left). However, viewing them from up close in the Scrapbook Theater, we can see their ears are buttons attached to their bodies by their masks threaded through the holes (right).

In Super Mario Maker 2, Music Blocks have unique sounds for objects that cannot be directly placed in the editor or cannot normally activate the blocks. This footage gives a few examples: shell-less Koopas, Bowser's falling flames and a 10-coin, which needs a POW Block to fall.

In Super Mario World, when Small Mario finishes a level while riding Yoshi and shows the victory sign, the top of his head is offset by 2 pixels to the left, making his hat appear misaligned (left). In remakes and the Super Mario Maker games, this has been corrected (right).

The Art of Super Mario Odyssey book explains that the images Mario sees when he captures entities are their "actual memories". This implies that when capturing characters, not only does Mario have complete control over their bodies, but also full access to their minds.

In the Super Mario All-Stars version of Super Mario Bros. 3, if a Koopaling is defeated with fireballs on the first frame after emerging from the shell, the Koopaling's sprite will be completely scrambled upon death.

In the sunken ship in Jolly Roger Bay in Super Mario 64, there is one corner that has no collision that Mario can swim right through (left). Swimming upwards after going through the wall will lead Mario to an open expanse of water in the darkness (right).

NES Open Tournament Golf is the earliest in-game instance in which Donkey Kong spoke. The screenshots below show his dialogue at the beginning of a game. As such, Donkey Kong's first words can be considered to have been "MARIO, your total prize is $0."

In Super Mario Galaxy, whenever Mario stands directly underneath a point of interest, like a Grand Star, the game will attempt to make him look over both of his shoulders at once. This will result in him raising his shoulders one at a time in a rhythmic motion.

The Super Mario All-Stars version of Super Mario Bros. has unused debug functionality to replace Mario's sprite with a blue rectangle reading "PLAYER". The rectangle also becomes red when Mario turns into Fire Mario.

To comply with Korean gambling laws, the Korean version of Super Mario 64 DS removes the Rec Room minigames, which contain casino games. This is done in the simplest manner possible by just removing all NPCs related to the minigames. Left: international versions, right: Korean.

The data for Super Mario RPG includes an unused enemy mind-reading message: "I REALLY hate males...!" The game contains many unused enemies, but it is likely the message belongs to one of the eight pictured here, as they do not already have other messages assigned to them.

Super Dragon, Yoshi's Final Smash in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, makes him grow wings but otherwise retains his model (left). However, the Super Dragon trophy (right) shows him also losing his saddle. This is the only existing in-game depiction of an adult Yoshi without his saddle.

At release, the Nintendo Switch version of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze contained a rare glitch where beating level 3-3 would not open level 3-4. Note there is no path to access 3-4 (circled). The game would simply end at that point, as there would be no way to continue.

In Super Mario Maker 2, exploiting the fact that doors can be placed behind Bullet Bill Blasters and On/Off Switches can be placed behind Skewers allows the creation of secret doors that require jumping in an inconspicuous place to uncover.
