Great @WSJ report by @JillianKayM charting Beijing's efforts to imprison & bankrupt prominent pro-democracy activist & owner of the iconic Apple Daily @JimmyLaiApple. Per @HKMarkSimon, AD's been cut out of 65% of HK's ad market due to political pressure. wsj.com/articles/the-p…

So the 'bomb' at WTS temple was a student's measuring device. Not the first time the HK Police have mistaken simple electronics for a bomb As @bewaterhkg says, I wonder what their report will say... 'M̶y̶ ̶d̶o̶g̶ ̶a̶t̶e̶ ̶m̶y̶ ̶h̶o̶m̶e̶w̶o̶r̶k̶ the police detonated my homework'

Grandma Wong, the HK protestor famous for waving her Union Jack, who's been detained (& uncontactable) in mainland 🇨🇳 for 9 months, has said: 'I've been barred from leaving SZ for 9 months... I miss HK so much. Add oil!' Both heartwarming & heartbreaking thestandnews.com/politics/%E8%A…

Today the Hong Kong Police put out appeals for information concerning 2 cases of isolated violence against anti-protest activists. Nothing on their clear sexual assault of a Stand News reporter yesterday, or litany of brutalising. Unsurprising 72.6% of people are dissatisfied.

Joshua Wong has written a thoughtful & reflective thread ahead of his sentencing tomorrow: “Despite possible jail sentences ahead, it is my honour to stand with each of you from the very beginning... whatever storm we might face, I always have my faith in my fellow HongKongers” twitter.com/joshuawongcf/s…

British HK Police officer Rupert Dover has casually admitted to the SCMP that he gave the order to use force & fire tear gas that started this entire saga on 612. Extraordinary. A sell-out who betrayed the U.K. & turned enforcer for a brutal dictatorship. scmp.com/news/hong-kong…

Pretty incredible: Kazuo Shii, chairman of the Japanese Communist Party (4th largest political party in Japan), has savaged plans for draconian national security laws in HK & called for them to be dropped. Shows the ideological diversity in the worldwide condemnation of Beijing. twitter.com/shiikazuo/stat…

Big statement from the Foreign Secretary on the disqualification of pro-democracy legislators. The new claim that the UK will “hold China to the obligations it freely assumed under international law” strongly implies the UK will pursue breaches of the JD in international courts. twitter.com/DominicRaab/st…

As the 12 HK youths appear in a Shenzhen court in a sham trial, the EU is to sign a huge investment deal with China following assurances from Beijing over - get this - workers’ rights & forced labour (!) History will judge this savagely. A nauseating juxtaposition in today’s @FT

Today’s @AppleDaily_HK runs with leading HK academics warning the National Security Law threatens free speech, intellectual & academic freedoms, as universities are subject to many of its provisions. Meanwhile CE Carrie Lam is claiming the Law can “get HK back on track”... lol

With @hkcnews_com ceasing operations, every major pro-democracy news outlet in Hong Kong has now either been forcibly shuttered or opted to close rather than be smothered in Beijing’s unrelenting quest to extinguish any & all dissent. The darkest hour for press freedom. twitter.com/hkcnews_com/st…

HK01: HK CE Carrie Lam will deliver a press conference at 6pm & announce the Legislative Council election will be postponed for an entire year. RTHK & SCMP also reporting the same. Pandemic cited, but real reason is pro-Beijing parties face annihilation. hk01.com/%E6%94%BF%E6%8…

Per Now News, police have stated they will not enter Victoria Park; site of the now-banned Tiananmen anniversary vigil, unless there is ‘chaos’. But Telegram groups show a large policing operation is in progress across HK. Unclear how this’ll develop or if there will be clashes.

Lee Cheuk-Yan (李卓人), former chair of the group that organises HK's annual Tiananmen vigil, has called on HKers to light candles across HK on the night of 6.4 after the HK government announced a de facto ban on the event. Could be a brilliant upstaging. news.rthk.hk/rthk/en/compon…
