Pro-🇨🇳 supporters have again copied pro-democracy activists by flyposting political stickers on buses. They feature pro-dem politicians incl. Alvin Yeung & the slogan 'if you burn, you burn with them' Don't expect original thought from supporters of an authoritarian dictatorship

Tam Yiu-chung, HK’s sole delegate to the NPCSC (🇨🇳’s top legislative body) is pushing for the national security law to be retroactive & increased sentencing to “enhance its deterrent effect”. Not only a traitor but someone actively trying to kill off HK. scmp.com/news/hong-kong…

As coronavirus cases subside in HK, you know the protests are restarting in earnest when you see 香港人日程表/HongKongers’ Schedule pics flying round Telegram This is despite a ban on gatherings of more than 8 people that renders any mass protests de facto illegal under the law.

Breaking: The results of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy primary have just been released - only currently formatted as a spreadsheet in Chinese but young radical democrats have triumphed across Hong Kong, incl. Ventus Lau in NTE & Sunny Cheung in KW. Joshua Wong tops the poll in KE.

Epic op-ed in the @guardian by @majian53: "In China & Hong Kong, the only source of hope will be the stubborn refusal to forget, & the fierce clinging to the humane ideals of the peaceful protesters who filled Tiananmen Square in 1989." Words of wisdom. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

HK Justice Secretary Teresa Cheng: none of my business if Hong Kongers get sentenced to death in the mainland under the national security law. The HK government doesn’t care about the lives of anyone in HK, and if you’re pro-democracy you’re now considered more than worthless. twitter.com/rthk_enews/sta…

SCMP reports Beijing is mulling scrapping all 117 seats set to be filled by overwhelmingly pro-democracy district councillors in the election committee that selects Hong Kong’s chief executive, in an effort to crush their influence on the 2022 CE election. scmp.com/news/hong-kong…

Today’s @AppleDaily_HK leads with a showcase of horrific incidents of police brutality that were captured by media outlets that won’t be recognised under new Police General Orders - a de facto police-imposed press accreditation system. Press freedom in HK withers away yet further

Though peaceful mass marches have been rendered impossible due to rampant police violence, public transport closures & the National Security Law, be in no doubt the desire for democracy among HK people is as strong as ever. Set for 500,000 votes in just the *primary*. Incredible.

Breaking: In a move without precedence in 30 years, the HK Police have banned the annual June 4th vigil to commemorate the Tiananmen Square massacre, citing risks to public health & the gathering ban. Organisers now plan a mass candle-lighting across HK. thestandnews.com/politics/%E6%9…

HK01 reporting HK’s public broadcaster RTHK hasn’t been invited by the government to film the the flag raising ceremony & 🍾 reception on July 1st for the first time, but TVB - criticised by many for excessively pro-🇨🇳 coverage - have. Changing times... hk01.com/%E7%A4%BE%E6%9…

Can’t believe @SkyNews let pro-Beijing stooge Alex Lo of the SCMP speak on the proposed national security laws in HK & “the violent protest movement”. 0:37 - “I think if you have lived through HK in the past 6 months...” Mate you write your bile from the safety of Canada. STFU.

Poignant photos of mourners outside Pacific Place by student journalists from HSU. Slogans on the cards left by people include: “May we mourn for Leung, may we mourn for freedom.” “We will keep fighting. Justice, freedom, democracy.”

In addition to acquiescing to brutal arrests by undercover police & the pepper spraying of journalists, New Town Plaza’s management has handed out notices to peaceful protestors threatening legal action for “posting of posters or stickers”. As the U.S. election rumbles on & on, a reminder that this week the HK Police have launched a Stasi-style national security hotline for people to snitch on their fellow citizens — & claim they’ve received 2,500 tips already. My latest for @AppleDaily_HK: hk.appledaily.com/opinion/202011…

In an unprecedented move by a sitting PM, the British Prime Minister has authored an op-ed in a HK newspaper (the SCMP) outlining the UK govt’s pledge to expand BNO rights. Now a lifeboat scheme for HK refugees *must* follow. More to do, but v positive. scmp.com/comment/opinio…

After a day relatively free of clashes due to the massive policing operation, protestors have occupied Nathan Rd in Mong Kok. Chants of 'Hong Kong independence, the only way out', a hallmark of more recent protests, went up through the crowd. Pic: Stand News #HongKongProtests

“I was relieved to see that Peng Shuai was doing fine, which was our main concern” — Emma Terho, Chair of the IOC Athletes' Commission. The International Olympic Committee is actively aiding the Chinese government’s attempt to whitewash the case of Peng Shuai. A total disgrace. twitter.com/Athlete365/sta…

A year & a half ago, I had a reporting gig & was standing outside the British Consulate in HK as people demonstrated for expanded BNO rights. If you’d asked me then what are the chances of it happening, I’d have told you, emphatically, 0%. Today, the UK’s BNO visa scheme opens.

Protestors are gathering across HK to mark police initiating the violence on 612 last year. Protests all banned so an ‘exhibition of resistance’ is underway; organisers calling for HKers to ‘遍地開花’ — ‘blossom everywhere’. Lots of undercover police so be careful if you’re out.

A former police officer was detained for a short time before being released for shouting “long live Liverpool!" earlier, celebrating their league title win. As an Everton fan I believe this was justified action by the police. Support HK Police. Love the motherland. Love HK. 🇨🇳

These are idle threats from Beijing. Even if the government banned HKers from travelling to the UK, they could easily enter via a third country. In order to stop them they would literally have to ban HKers from all international travel, indefinitely. theguardian.com/world/2020/jul…
