I explained it to her and she replied, "oh, so it's the one being like the girl."
She paused and then asked, "are YOU the girl?" I was honest and answered, "not typically," and shE FUCKING GOES...
"Yes, being girl must be harder because you always have to pretend to like it."

I went on to explain how queer sex dynamics are unique and said, "imagine how it'd be different if you were with a woman."
She scoffs, "NO, never," and when I prodded her further sHE GOES...
"Well if I was lesbian then I would probably just hold hands and GARDEN or something."

I feel emboldened by this breakthrough conversation and was like, fuck it, might as well explain what bears and otters and twinks are, and she asks, "so gay men are like animals?"
I respond, "some gay types, yeah," and she hAS THE NERVE TO SAY...

Anyway, just thought I’d share that it took my conservative, Christian, Korean mother over 30 years to get to this conversation, so it’s possible for those who love you to grow with your gay journey.

While I’m on the topic of shows more people should watch, #Unorthodox on Netflix absolutely wrecked me. Incredible performances. A fascinating cultural exposé. The entire limited series was both engrossing and inspiring. Highly recommend.
