I stayed on the men/women binary for this topic, but the situation ain’t great for the LGBTQ community either. I would say that physical assaults are rare (compared to the west) but the general acceptance is slim. Gay marriage is still not allowed, and gender binary is strong.

These weird, Japan-unique sexual crimes are rampant. I’ve never heard of any of these things happen in the UK or US, much less it being common.
So I’m not afraid of dying in Japan but I’m still afraid and I do not feel safe.
Next time you say Japan is safe, keep this in mind.

There’s weird crimes here that I rarely ever hear about elsewhere - hidden cameras in bathrooms/changing rooms, purposefully bumping into women (butsukari ojisan), putting semen and/or pubic hair on women, undoing baby carriers, being put urine in your drinks…

When they say Japan is safe, they mean FOR MEN. Yeah, murder is rare. You can sleep on the streets drunk and be fine. Lost wallet will be returned.
But women have to worry about sexual assault, groping, upskirting, stalkers, catcalling(nanpa), etc. And we do not feel safe.

10・20代からしたら、年上のパートナーは色々知っていて知的に見えるし(ただ長く生きてるので情報が蓄積されているだけ)、お金を持っていて素敵なレストランに連れてってくれて。話も聞いてくれてアドバイスまでしてくれて頼もしい。
でも、本当にまともな人は年相応のパートナーがいる。
