Pro-democracy candidates won 80% of District Council seats last November and polls indicate that close to 3 million HKers joined protests last year, with their supporters outnumbered their opponents nearly 2:1. Yet Carrie Lam is still calling them “enemies of the people”. Wow. twitter.com/alvinllum/stat…

Obviously all eyes have been on Central and Prince Edward tonight but far down south in sleepy Aberdeen hundreds of people are gathering ok the waterfront promenade to chant, watch #HKprotests footage and play with lasers. This place never sees demonstration!

I was very on the fence about sharing that story about @WHO Director-General @DrTedros blaming Taiwanese for all the criticism levied at his organisation, due to the flimsy attribution—but considering the attitude of his senior advisor here, that story is looking more credible... twitter.com/ezracheungtoto…

Their act of “subversion” was participating in primaries to determine democratic candidates for the 2020 Legislative Council elections, subsequently cancelled by Chief Executive Carrie Lam. If convicted, they could face life in prison under the draconian National Security Law. twitter.com/HKDemocrats/st…

Carrie Lam adviser and cabinet member Regina Ip today proposing making HK residency—plus ensuing rights—subject to a loyalty test. In the same week that police blocked access to a protest site, another troubling sign of what's to come as HK gets full “restive region” treatment.

47 opposition figures in HK charged with “inciting subversion” under the NSL today and denied bail, all because they tried to win an election. How appropriate that this is happening as Taiwan marks the anniversary of the 228 Incident and the White Terror. tw.appledaily.com/international/…

Then-President Lee Teng-hui on the eve of Hong Kong's in November 1996: “50 years without change won’t be so simple. Our country already plans to enact laws to take in HK people who support democracy when the necessary time arrives, and I believe parliament will pass this bill."

Like 2019 itself, the exhibition “Be Water, Be Fire, Be a Voice” in Kaohsiung’s Pier 2 art district is an emotional rollercoaster that made me beam and tear up in turns.

Even McDonald’s in Taipei is now advertising using the phrase「缺一不可」made famous by the #HongKongProtests’ chant「五大訴求,缺一不可」(“five demands, not one less”). Unlike McDonald’s HK, owned by China’s CITIC Capital, McDonald’s Taiwan franchise is owned by a local firm.

The turnout for District Council elections this morning is absolutely unprecedented. The queue at my local polling station does a complete lap around the housing estate. I didn’t have to line up *at all* to vote in the last election. Demographics are a cross-section of society.
