Bedlam just broke out on Shantung Street in Mong Kong after undercover police posing as protesters tackled several people to the ground and pepper sprayed the crowd.
Hong Kong's Bishop Ha has urged the government to set up an independent inquiry into the death of 22-year-old protester Alex Chow Tsz-lok. "This is something that no civilized society should accept, and anyone with conscience would not accept,” he said. catholicregister.org/home/internati…
Police water canon maliciously targets reporter on Hennessy Road.
This, presumably, is what HK01 was alluding to by “even bigger news” that would accompany postponement of the LegCo election: a mass disqualification of pro-democracy candidates that seems aimed at barring all primary winners from standing for office. news.mingpao.com/ins/%e6%b8%af%…
Police have just rescinded permission for today’s march and ordered everyone to disperse. This is the scene in Wan Chai with many children and families. Victoria Park is still 1/3 full of people starting the march. They’re now all guilty of taking part in an “illegal assembly.”
In the lobby of Taipei Main Station, a flash mob to support Hong Kong—as it faces the effective demise of One Country, Two Systems—is about to begin.
@TiffanyAndCo .@TiffanyAndCo just deleted a tweet showing a model with her hand over her right eye because Chinese bots were accusing the company of supporting the “rioters” in Hong Kong. Incredible how quickly global companies will self-censor now and sell out people fighting for democracy.
HK Police Force Procedures Manual Article 29-02 Use of Force Continuum states (post-10/1 revisions) that pepper spray may be used only when confronted with "Defensive Resistance”—i.e. "Physical action [that] might cause injury to oneself or others." The flag of East Turkestan is flying in Central today at a rally to show solidarity with Uighurs persecuted in China. The crowd of hundreds is quickly growing as speakers on stage call for the freeing of Nobel laureate Ilham Tohti and all political prisoners.
Today’s the day HK’s election was scheduled for before being postponed by at least a year, and a rally is due to kick off in Kowloon to protest the move. Thousands of police are patrolling the area. My bus across the harbour was boarded by officers who searched everyone’s bags.
As “Glory to Hong Kong” brings the crowd to their feet, they seem to stand taller and shine brighter than the skyscrapers surrounding them.
Easily tens of thousands in this march as it makes it way toward Hung Hom, passing through the same battleground as the attempt to relieve the police siege of PolyU on 18 November.
Outside Prince Edward station, it’s hard to tell who outnumbers whom: the citizens queuing up to commemorate the anniversary of the 8.31 incident or the riot police surrounding them. For now, the heavy police presence means all of MK is awash with black clothes and white flowers.
The group on the left was led away first. Most looked like regular shoppers in the wrong place at the wrong time, and weren’t cuffed or forced to kneel. The group on the right, all on the ground and cuffed, are still there. This crowd is mostly young and dressed in black.
How to solve months-long crisis of legitimacy that draws millions of angry citizens, HK-style: 1. Glue down/cement over paving stones so protesters can’t throw them 2. Remove rubbish bins so they can’t be used for roadblocks 3. Cage in every pedestrian walkway over a major road
According to Apple Daily and Golden live streamers, there are “over a hundred” undercover police dressed as protesters at Kowloon Bay’s Telford Plaza shopping mall right now. That’s pushing four times the number of actual protesters in Landmark North, Sheung Shui this afternoon.
This is worse than it looks. Even a normal baton strike (i.e. to the thighs/forearms) would be against regulation, as it is reserved for meeting “active aggression.” But leaked police training manuals show that a strike to the head is in fact “deadly force”—same as firearm use. twitter.com/leungjasminee/…
Thundering reception for Lam Cheuk-ting and Ted Hui as they step out of the West Kowloon courts, bailed on $15,000 and $5,000 respectively and having surrendered their passports.
Out today, the latest episode of BBC’s The Compass radio documentary series spends close to half of its running time in Hong Kong (PolyU and HKU) to discuss the issue of free speech and its limitations on university campuses. bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/w3…
In a message just posted on Facebook. Taiwan’s Pres. Tsai @iingwen says she will consider invoking article 60 of the Regulations Governing Relations with HK and Macau to institute “necessary emergency measures” to help Hongkongers if the city’s situation continues to deteriorate.
In Central another spontaneous lunchtime march has kicked off to support the protesters trapped inside the Polytechnic University. They’re chanting, “Save PolyU! There are students [there]!”

Tonight officers under the newly-established nat'l security branch of the HK police are rounding up teenagers for “inciting others to separatism,” which many attribute to a single FB post on Sunday: facebook.com/10339838766766… This is why the NSL is also called the “insecurity law." twitter.com/studentlocalis…
Hundreds of people have assembled at Taipei’s Liberty Square to remember the victims of the June 4th massacre, including a sizeable coterie of Hongkongers and their supporters.
