In Super Mario Bros., after beating a castle level, Mario always starts the next world by exiting from that castle, except in 5-1. This suggests the 5-1 seen in the finished game was not the original concept for the level, and was moved to that spot later. Details in image.

Mario Party 8 stores graphics for text pop-ups as individual letters. The letters are displayed roughly in correct order in the files, but due to duplicate letters not being needed, the texture sheets appear to be misspelled versions of the actual messages. Examples below.

Badge worn by Nintendo employees at the 1994 Summer Consumer Electronics Show in Chicago to promote Donkey Kong Country. Due to an inaccurate manufacturing process, Donkey Kong's eyes appear to be looking in different directions.

The Shogun Studios area in Paper Mario: The Origami King is based on a real-world Japanese theme park called Edo Wonderland, with some explicit references like the Japanese name or the House of Tricky Ninjas. Details in image.

In the Super Mario Maker games, putting a Piranha Plant on a pipe instead of inside it will result in it not retreating. Then, putting a Muncher inside that pipe will make it move the Piranha Plant as it extends, allowing the Piranha Plant to have longer reach than usual.

Both Mario and Luigi have had models where their legs have been adjusted to the other brother's length. From left to right: regular Mario, Luigi-legged Mario (unused model in Luigi's Mansion data), Mario-legged Luigi (playable Luigi from Super Mario Galaxy), regular Luigi.

Last year, I attempted to get a closer look at the unique Snailicorn enemy from New Super Mario Bros. by increasing the game's internal resolution. Now, thanks to Models Resource member "lemurboy12", the model has been extracted, allowing us to finally see it from all sides.

In a 2017 interview, Shigeru Miyamoto has stated that the Tox Box enemy from Super Mario 64 (left) is "one of his masterpieces" due to its easily understood design.

In World 4-2 of Super Mario Bros., it is possible to spawn more moving sprites than the engine can handle (left). This will cause a column of tiles in the level to be overwritten with zeroes, including the HUD, changing Mario's name into "M0rio" (right, note name in top left).

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe added a period after "Nintendo" in the copyright line compared to the original. Note that it is not standard Nintendo policy to add the period; thus, this was a deliberate decision, possibly to indicate the game will never be updated any further.

In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, if Mario and Rawk Hawk die simultaneously (left, note Mario's 0 HP in the HUD and Rawk Hawk's 0 HP under him), then Rawk Hawk will act like he has lost (middle). However, after the battle ends, Rawk Hawk will be declared the winner (right).

In Super Mario Odyssey, whenever characters dance or bob to the music, the speed of their animations will change depending on the tempo of the music track currently playing. Note the Jammin' Toad bobbing much faster when a more lively track is played.

The low-polygon version of Peachette's model in Mario Kart Tour, used when she is far away from the camera, is missing most of her torso. This is not apparent from the front; however, when the model is viewed from the side, a large chunk can be seen cut out of her body.

In the Mystery of the Monkey Cage star in Tall, Tall Mountain in Super Mario 64, the Ukiki is nowhere to be found after the cage breaks. Viewing the impact frame by frame shows the monkey is still there up until the cage hits the floor, whereupon it explodes alongside the cage.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story contains unused sprites of Mario being pressed into the shape of a key. Luigi would have needed to carry Mario on his head in this form, presumably to then insert him into a lock somewhere.

In Super Paper Mario, the background of the Underwhere features graphs that resemble genealogy charts (top right), possibly documenting the souls of the dead. In addition, similar rectangles fall from the sky, likely representing the arrivals of the newly departed (bottom right).

In Super Mario Odyssey, the New Donk City power plant depletes Power Moons at a rate of exactly one per second. Since the power plant is said to be the only source of the city's power, we can calculate that New Donk City runs on 86,400 Power Moons per day, or 31,536,000 per year.

In the late 1980s, select officially licensed Super Mario Bros. merchandise used bizarre artwork depicting Mario with an evil expression and Princess Peach as a small child. The highest-quality version of this image was used on this 1989 promotional Nintendo Cereal System poster.

In the Japanese version of Paper Mario: The Origami King, the Boot Car is called "ブーツ2000 GT-R" (left). This is a reference to the Nissan Skyline 2000 GT-R, a line of sports cars famous for its extreme success in Japanese touring car racing championships (right).

In the Super Mario Galaxy games, it is not possible to escape most boss arenas during the battle. An exception is King Lakitu from Super Mario Galaxy 2, where Mario can actually leave the platform. If he does, King Lakitu will stretch, then fall asleep until Mario comes back.

The Art of Super Mario Odyssey book reveals that one of the unused costume designs for Mario was "Golden Age of Animation Mario" (left), which combined the aesthetics of the first official Mario artwork on the Donkey Kong arcade cabinet (middle) and 1920s cartoons (right).

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Chauncey's crib can be seen in the Luigi's Mansion stage. On the underside of the crib is a Boo face. It is not present under the crib in the original game, and is in fact the texture for the Boo Ball item that seems to have been imported by mistake.

In Paper Mario: The Origami King, if Mario hits a Snow Spike just as the snowball is about to hit him (left), then flees from the ensuing battle, both Mario and the Snow Spike will be gone completely upon returning (right). Since Mario is gone, the game must be reset to continue.

In Super Mario Sunshine, Yoshi dissolves when he enters water. In the last few frames before this, his model undergoes severe deformation whereby he curls up and his head and hands become larger. After the hands have grown to roughly half of Yoshi's size, he disintegrates.

Normally, Mario's mouth in his models is centered on his face (left). However, one Super Mario Run render moves Mario's mouth to one side of his face (middle). Using the eye as a reference point, we can create a mock-up of what this model might look like from the front (right).
