Clay model of an early concept version of Isle Delfino from Super Mario Sunshine, made by Yoshiaki Koizumi, the game's director and later producer of most major Mario titles. The only existing photo (left) is very small; I have used an upscaling algorithm to enlarge it (right).

In Super Mario World, Baby Yoshis only hatch if Mario is alone; if he is riding Yoshi, it hatches into a 1-Up instead (left). Modifying the code to force both to appear reveals they share a graphics address, resulting in Yoshi either having Baby Yoshi as a head or vice versa.

Left: concept art of alternate designs of mural enemies from Drybake Stadium in Paper Mario: Sticker Star. Upper right: some of the unused Mural Koopa designs still exist in the texture data. Bottom right: the final Mural Koopa designs battled in the game, for comparison.

In the North American version of Super Mario Maker 2, Clear Conditions containing "all (1)" use the singular: "all (1) Bowser", while in the European version, it's the plural: "all (1) Bowsers". As "all (1)" is an ungrammatical construct, neither is more correct than the other.

In the Sunshine Airport track in Mario Kart 8/Deluxe, veering to the right during the second glider section shows oddly-shaped rocks in the distance (left, circled). A model viewer reveals these are Koopa Troopa rocks, likely a reference to Koopa Troopa Beach from Mario Kart 64.

During the Mr. L battle in Chapter 4-4 of Super Paper Mario, if Mario grabs Mr. L, switches into 3D, throws him into 3D space, and switches back into 2D, Mr. L has no ways of attacking Mario or returning to 2D. Effectively, Mr. L is trapped in the third dimension indefinitely.

Illustration of an evil Mario from a review of Mario Party 2 from the Australian N64 Gamer magazine, illustrating the joke that Mario Party games ruin friendships due to causing strife over random outcomes. Over the years, this developed into a common joke in many publications.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mr. Resetti has several speeches when summoned as an Assist Trophy. One of them includes a line where he does an impersonation of one of the fighters currently playing. Here are all his impersonations of the characters related to the Mario franchise.

The data of Luigi's Mansion contains a test map which includes a variety of objects, among them Luigi's arm used in cutscenes and a crownless King Boo (left). Luigi's cutscene arm is much larger than his regular arms, which can be seen by positioning Luigi next to it (right).

Screenshot of the 1996 homepage of the Nintendo of Japan official website, found in a German magazine. As publicly available backups of the site only go back to 1997, the original image file containing this unique Mario render appears to be lost to time.

Earthworm Jim Special Edition for the Sega CD contains an unauthorized Donkey Kong appearance. If the game is paused and the secret code Down + C, B, A, A, A, A, B, C, B, A, A, A, A, A, B, C is entered, Jim will wear a mask of Donkey Kong with an arrow through his head.

The Art of Super Mario Odyssey book details a concept, unused in the finished game, whereby Mario would witness a character's development throughout the story. In this concept, Mario would see a boy buy a trumpet, practice, and eventually become a famous musician.

In The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, there is a unique Mario mask inside the Happy Mask Shop that is impossible to see clearly in-game (circled, left). The design is actually different from the Mario mask designs used in The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask/3D (right).

Although official artwork for Super Mario Bros. exists for nearly every character, enemy, and even item in the game, none of it depicts Luigi. Luigi is also absent from all versions of the game's box art, and illustrations in all manuals.

In one very brief shot of the Lego Super Mario trailer, a figure can be seen from afar that does not appear in the rest of the trailer or in any of the promotional photos currently released for the product. It is a Monty Mole (circled on left, close-up on right).

In Super Mario Sunshine, Mario's unlockable sunglasses do not appear in any reflective surfaces, although his Shine Sprite shirt does. This is the only in-game way to see Mario with the shirt, but without the sunglasses, as he cannot normally wear the shirt separately.

In Super Mario World, if Mario slides down a slope into a trampoline, he will be launched upward while still in his sitting position. As Cape Mario, he can glide down for a significant amount of time while appearing to sit in mid-air.

Characters in Super Mario Galaxy have low, middle and high-quality models, arranged here from left to right. Luigi's middle-quality model has multiple versions of parts of his body loaded simultaneously, resulting in his hands and mouth appearing deformed (middle).

1996 promotional Donkey Kong sound plush, only given away in select Nintendo of Japan contests and never sold in stores. When squeezed, the plush plays the chest-beating sound that Donkey Kong makes when left idle in Donkey Kong Country.

A 1998 issue of the German Club Nintendo magazine included a Yoshi horoscope section that depicted the twelve signs of the zodiac using edited Yoshi's Story artwork. Here are all the illustrations in isolated form.

A 1990 BBC documentary shows a scene from the level design process of Super Mario Bros. 3. The end of World 7-Airship is shown with two cannons (left), then a designer removes them (middle). This decision persisted into the finished version (right), which also has no cannons.

In Super Paper Mario, the decorative clock in Merlee's Mansion in Chapter 2-3 displays the Wii system time (shown here at different times of day). Since the clock has no in-game purpose and is visually similar to other decorations, this is likely to be overlooked during gameplay.

Artwork of Mario with humorous captions, signed by Shigeru Miyamoto and published in the various Latin American editions of the Club Nintendo magazine in 1993, alongside of a photo of him during the signing.

In Mario Kart: Double Dash, there is a smooth transition between the rocky and grassy parts of the slope on the DK Mountain track (left). However, in Mario Kart Wii's version of it, this was not included, resulting in the border between the textures becoming very abrupt (right).
