In a 2009 Iwata Asks interview, Shigeru Miyamoto and Satoru Iwata discuss that if the Donkey Kong arcade cabinet's specifications had not included an originally unused extra button, there is a possibility that Mario would never have received the ability to jump.

Extremely rare 2005 promotional Super Mario Strikers Chain Chomp soccer ball. Note that this is not based on anything from the game; the Chain Chomp appears in-game only in its regular form and not as a ball.

The official Prima guide for Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story contains unique low-resolution artwork that depicts early designs of some enemies. Here are the enemies where the artwork is different from the finished game, with the art on the left and the sprite on the right.

In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, the Shadow Queen's default form is only seen in cutscenes, where her body is bent and at an angle to the camera (left). By extracting her textures from the game, we can see what her body would look like if she was standing upright (right).

Extracting the graphics of the Punch-Out microgame from WarioWare: Smooth Moves reveals it is run in a window with some black pixels in the corner. These match up with the interface of an unofficial emulator, meaning the developers used it to emulate Punch-Out (details below).

One of the credits images in Wario Land 4 depicts Wario holding a robot (left). Extracting it from the data (middle), we can see it is actually an extremely specific reference to a piece of art from the manual for Virtual Boy Wario Land (right); note the nearly identical hands.

In Super Mario Odyssey, the hatless Volbonans in the Luncheon Kingdom that can be captured usually have their eyes closed, appearing to be asleep (left). However, waiting near one will show that they sometimes briefly wake up, revealing that they have bags under their eyes.

On the 8th floor in Luigi's Mansion 3, a picture of the cast of Mario Strikers Charged can be seen on the wall at an angle (left). Since the camera cannot be moved in-game, I edited the image to straighten out the picture (middle) and attempted to identify the characters (right).

The Shy Guy airships from the giant battle tutorial in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story can be loaded into normal battles by modifying the code, unlike all other giant battle enemies. They appear very small, have no attacks and die to any damage, but are otherwise functional.

Super Mario RPG and the Classic NES Series versions of Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels all use sprites from Super Mario Bros. that are distorted to some degree. Here they are ordered by amount of distortion, with the original sprites on the left.

Despite being featured in the major cutscenes of Super Mario Galaxy, the UFO that abducts Peach's Castle does not actually exist in the game. These scenes are video files that are not rendered in-engine; the UFO does not appear in gameplay and its model is not found in the data.

Each overworld enemy in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door has a unique battle ID. If the ID is changed to be invalid, the game does not crash; interactions with the enemy then simply don't start a battle and instead generate a harmless colorful shower of star particles.

Chaining together the world maps from Super Mario Bros. Deluxe creates a full map of the Mushroom Kingdom. While some connection points are choppy (shown with black arrows), others are completely seamless (red arrows), suggesting the map could have been intended to be continuous.

In Super Mario 64 DS, if Mario runs towards a certain tree outside Peach's Castle at a specific angle, he will clip through the floor. Sliding down will deposit Mario below the ground, from where he can swim out of bounds, and continue swimming in any direction forever.

Before being finalized as stone statues, the Jaxis in the Sand Kingdom in Super Mario Odyssey were planned to be living cat/sphinx-like creatures, as seen in the Art of Super Mario Odyssey book. The speaker on the right is a reference to the Message Block from Super Mario World.

According to Retro Studios 3D artist Eric Kozlowsky, this steam ship was one of the first assets to be created for Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Although the ship is not used in the finished game, a few wrecked pieces of it can be found in the background of Level 1-4.

In Super Mario Bros., Hammer Bros. leave their positions and start charging Mario if they are on screen for 70 time units. This can be used in 7-1 to trick them into self-destructing; by waiting to the left of this pit, the Hammer Bros. will eventually approach Mario and fall in.

1992 promotional photo of Shigeru Miyamoto in front of a wall of TVs displaying Mario. Upon close inspection, the image seems to consist of the Moldorm battle from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past overlaid with the Mario in Real Time/Mario Teaches Typing 2 head.

In the demo version of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, found on a 2004 multi-game demo disc, the X-Nauts are called "Boomer Gangers" when tattled. No other text related to X-Nauts is present, but this suggests the entire organization was going to be called the "Boomer Gang".
