In Super Mario Sunshine, the sign on top of the hut in Gelato Beach appears differently between the Japanese and North American versions. Looking closely at the signs, the stylized runes spell out the respective name of the beach in both versions, "Mamma" and "Gelato".

The snowmen seen in the Snow theme of the NSMBU style of Super Mario Maker 2 (top left) are a reference to those seen in Level 3-1 of New Super Luigi U, with the Luigi snowman being hidden and only visible when the course is finished with a time ending with two identical digits.

The official Japanese site for Super Mario Maker 2 reveals what the Angry Sun looks like in the NSMBU style, not seen in the trailer (left). While almost certainly a coincidence, the sun's eye shape resembles the Sun Switches from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (right).

Regarding my recent Tweet about the word "walnuts" in the DK Rap in Donkey Kong 64: the game's composer, Grant Kirkhope (@grantkirkhope) has stated that the word was chosen for the rhyme with "peanuts" and did not represent any in-game objects.

The Mario games rated for the highest age by any official rating system are Super Mario 64 DS and New Super Mario Bros., both rated 12 by PEGI. Both games' rating is due to Luigi hosting gambling minigames; thus, this can be considered the most mature content in the Mario series.

Kinopi, an unused character found in the data of Super Mario Galaxy. Despite appearing similar to a Toad, it is not friendly and will hurt Mario on contact. Due to being unfinished, there is an error in the texture mapping resulting in Kinopi having a second face under his chin.

In Super Mario Odyssey, looking at the main level from the Isolated Rooftop checkpoint in the Metro Kingdom will show a man waving at Mario on a corner in the park. However, visiting the area with Mario shows the man is no longer there. A technical explanation is provided below.

Illustration on the packaging of a 2014 licensed "Wario with Mystery Accessory" figure. While the figure itself has Wario's regular face, the illustration shows him without rings around his eyes and with a nose that is not red, bringing his facial color scheme closer to Mario's.

This drawing of Yoshi and Toad from Game & Watch Gallery 4 is the only time Toad has ever been depicted with visible teeth in any official artwork for a game.

In Luigi's Mansion, the portrait ghost Neville is seen reading a book (top left). While too blurry to say for certain, the texture for the book (bottom left) seems to depict Mario's head and the words "Mario Story". This could be a reference to the Japanese name for Paper Mario.

Paper Mario uses a perspective trick to display the windmill in Gusty Gulch properly. While the blades appear attached to the mill in an ordinary manner during gameplay (left), they are actually floating in front of it (right) to prevent them from clipping into the building.

In New Super Mario Bros., whenever Small Mario ducks, the lower part of his torso deforms in such a way that it goes below ground, lower than Mario's feet. The internal resolution of the game has been increased in the attached screenshots for clearer view.

During the development of various games, the concept of expanding Bowser's affinity for airships into a full-blown pilot theme comes up, but is never used in the finished product. Left: plane airship concept for NSMB Wii, right: pilot Bowser concept for Skylanders: SuperChargers.

Throughout the Mario franchise, gold coins are sometimes shown to be picked up by magnets. Pure gold is not magnetic; however, gold alloys with at least 40% non-gold content can exhibit magnetism. Thus, the coins from the Mario franchise can be assumed to have at most 60% purity.

In the original Nintendo 64 version of Paper Mario, the ground in Star Haven has a rainbow effect that recolors the ground based on distance from the camera (top). This effect is hardware-specific and absent from the Wii and Wii U Virtual Console versions of the game (bottom).

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, there is an error in Mario's "wedding" costume that results in a hole between the model's shirt and trousers, through which the inside of the model can be seen. Although the model originates in Super Mario Odyssey, no such error is present there.
