Texture of the hidden Luigi portrait from World 5-4 of New Super Luigi U, extracted from the game's data. I have previously posted this in 2017; however, the extraction process at the time was imperfect and resulted in distortions in the image. This version is an accurate rip.

Paper Mario and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door start with Parakarry delivering a letter (left). Zooming out the camera in both games after he leaves the screen shows that he never actually exits the scene, instead merely hiding behind a tree or the letterbox bars (right).

An official render of Toadette for Super Mario Maker 2 contains the most realistic depiction of a piece of Nintendo hardware in artwork for a first-party Nintendo game to date: a Joy-Con that is modeled in such detail that it even includes all the legally mandated labeling.

Cartridge art and title screen of "Mali & Lugi Fighting 2", an unauthorized hack of Chip 'N Dale: Rescue Rangers 2 for the Famicom with Mario graphics. The artwork is taken from the cover of the 1993 Super Mario Compact Disco official music album.

The antagonist of the Game & Watch version of Balloon Fight is an anthropomorphic amphibian called "Oiram Repus", which is "Super Mario" spelled backwards. As there is no apparent connection or resemblance between the two, the reason for the reference is unknown.

Due to Bowser Jr. appearing almost exclusively in pre-rendered cutscenes in Super Mario Sunshine, his high-quality model is not actually present in the game's files. The only Bowser Jr. model in the data is used in the final battle, and is so low-polygon that it has no mouth.

The graphical data for the kings' chambers in Super Mario Bros. 3 contains an unused sprite of Toad with asymmetrical eyes. Here is a mock-up of the scene with Toad's regular sprite replaced with the unused one.

Box of limited-edition 1996 Kellogg's Frosted Mini-Wheats for a Super Mario 64 cross-promotion, featuring unique artwork of the penguins from Cool, Cool Mountain.

The calendar in the Toy Box in Super Mario Bros. Deluxe contains three entries when it is unlocked, one commemorating the release of Super Mario Bros. and the other two being extremely vague. Those actually mark the Japanese release dates of Mario Bros. and Super Mario Land.

Donkey Kong Country is the most underground-focused platformer in the greater Mario franchise, with 21 out of its 40 levels taking place in some sort of cave or mine. Despite featuring many sewers, no platformers starring Mario have such a high percentage of underground levels.

Super Mario Odyssey contains three Checkpoint Flags that are permanently missable, detailed below. If a save file is otherwise complete but displays fewer than 85 checkpoints found, it is likely that one of these was missed and the perfect score is not achievable on that file.

In the Japanese version of Super Mario 64, one wall next to the window leading to the Princess's Secret Slide is red (left). In all other versions, that wall is ordinary (right). Whether this was done intentionally to hint at the secret entrance or is a texture error is unknown.

The data of Mario Party contains two entirely functional, but ultimately unused gameplay modes: one for playing only the board game portion of the game without the minigames, and one for playing just the minigames without the board game. Details below.

In New Super Mario Bros., every power-up has a unique ID. Attempting to collect a power-up with an unused ID by modifying the code sometimes results in unique behaviors, such as Mario beginning to grow and not stopping until the game crashes due to his model being too large.

The 1989 commercial for Super Mario Bros. 2 (left) shows an unusual health meter in the upper left. This is actually a feature from the game's prototype version, where pressing Select gives the player 15 health (middle). The glitched health is a recolored part of Mario (right).

The data for the Mini-game Tour mode in Mario Party 6 contains prerendered images of early, extremely simplistic models of Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi and Twila riding the bus. Here is a comparison between the finished version (top) and the unused renders (bottom).

In the underground power plant in New Donk City in Super Mario Odyssey, there is a very large piece of graffiti on a side wall that is barely legible due to the texture's opacity being set to 50%. Here is the image extracted from the game's data with maximum contrast.

In Super Mario Maker (left), the transparent Star sprite that emerges from the Goal Roulette in the Super Mario Bros. 3 style has two extra pixels near the bottom left corner compared to the original game (middle). This error carries over into Super Mario Maker 2 (right).

A 1994 Wario's Woods manga shows a glimpse of the eventual future wedding of Mario and Princess Peach. The fairy sitting on Mario's head is Wanda, the protagonist of the Japan-only Mario & Wario for the Super Famicom, who is using time magic to be present at that moment.

Front and back cover illustrations from a Japanese guide for Super Mario World, featuring original designs for Princess Peach's outfit and Yoshi. Note that Yoshi is missing a shoe in the second image; this is due to him losing the shoe during the events illustrated in the book.

The quiz minigame "Snifit or Whiffit" from Paper Mario: Sticker Star and Paper Mario: Color Splash is called "Hit It or Snifit!" in the British versions of the games; presumably due to "whiff" meaning "miss" being American baseball slang and likely to be less known in Britain.

Completing the Special World in Super Mario World results in, among other changes, some enemies assuming alternate forms (left column). However, two forms were added exclusively to the Super Mario Advance 2 version that were absent from the original (middle and right columns).

The German version of Mario Party 5 hints at a secret romantic relationship between Princess Daisy and Wario. While a team made up of the two is called "Mismatched Pair" in the English version, the German version calls it "Heimlich Liebende", which translates to "secret lovers".

In Super Mario Galaxy 2, if Mario is left without player input in normal levels for a minute, he will fall asleep (left column). However, if this is done during a boss fight, instead of falling asleep, Mario will assume a fighting stance and an angry expression (right column).
