In Super Mario World, when Small Mario finishes a level while riding Yoshi and shows the victory sign, the top of his head is offset by 2 pixels to the left, making his hat appear misaligned (left). In remakes and the Super Mario Maker games, this has been corrected (right).

In Super Mario Odyssey, it is never shown what the Odyssey looked like before being abandoned in the Cascade Kingdom. The Art of Super Mario Odyssey book reveals that it was originally black with a pink ribbon, and the in-game red color scheme is a result of Power Moon magic.

A commonly found unlicensed Bowser plush from China has a manufacturing issue where Bowser's eyebrows are attached very flimsily to his forehead. Within several months of use, most of these toys' eyebrows fall down and only remain attached at the nose.

The music track playing in the bramble levels in Donkey Kong Country 2 is called "Stickerbush Symphony". However, during the late 2000s, the misspelling "Stickerbrush Symphony" with an extra R has taken hold among the audience and is now more widespread than the correct spelling.

The final section of the digital manual for Paper Mario: Color Splash, titled "Secret Stuff", contains photos of the real-life steak that the development team prepared and scanned in to create the texture for the Steak mini-boss in Chapter 5.

While it may appear like the backgrounds in Super Mario Bros. are made out of individually placed elements, there are in fact only 3 different pre-made backgrounds, seen in levels 1-1, 1-3 and 2-1. By changing a single byte in the game's code, any level can assume any background.

The Mario Characters Nintendo 3DS theme (top) is a remake of the earlier Mario Character Size Chart (bottom). Every character is either in a different pose or has updated shading, except for Birdo and Goomba, who were evidently not considered important enough to warrant this.

On the character selection screen of Mario Kart Wii, looking closely at Donkey Kong's innermost toes shows a red texture resembling painted nails (left: normal view, middle: zoomed in). This is actually a mapping error that applies Donkey Kong's mouth texture to his feet (right).

The reason Yoshi's Island is called Yo'ster Isle in Super Mario RPG is because the translator chose to use the original Japanese name for it from Super Mario World, ヨースター島, or Yoster Island. This is in turn a reference to イースター島, the Japanese name for Easter Island.

The oldest existing Princess Peach figurine, released in Japan in 1985. It was commissioned using only the original box art for Super Mario Bros. as a reference.

In Luigi's Mansion 3, when Luigi uses the Burst move, his Poltergust raises him into the air by its straps (left). However, when Gooigi performs the Burst, we can see that his Poltergust is instead attached to him by a solid mass of goo, being part of his body (right).

The amount of animation frames for Luigi in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (including where Mario is part of the sprite, such as when Luigi holds Mario) is the highest for any character in any Mario game, with 14836 individual frames. Below are all of them, at 1/13th the resolution.

Left: Game Freak designers Shigeki Morimoto and Junichi Masuda holding props from the commercial for the Japanese-only Mario & Wario. Middle: the commercial. Right: since this was one of the last games Game Freak developed before Pokémon, it is referenced in Pokémon Red and Blue.

In the intro to Super Paper Mario, Mario's house from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door appears with a black outline (left). This is not the result of a new shading method; instead, the outline is simply drawn separately around all objects to line up with the camera (right).

In Super Mario Sunshine, when Mario jumps out of water, droplets fly off his body. This is not merely a graphical effect; they actually dissolve Goop. The droplets can be used to skip most of the Goopy Inferno mission by creating a path from the river through the Lava Goop.

In Super Mario Bros. 2, strategically placing Potions allows picking up more than 9 coins per level. This will cause the coin count at the roulette to roll over to using letters. Collecting even more coins with cheats causes the display to go through all graphics in the game.

The Goomba's Shoe pouch sold exclusively at the Nintendo Tokyo store features unique official artwork of a Dry Bones holding up a white flag after being shattered by Mario's shoe.

The North American version of Yoshi's Island has two versions: 1.0, available at release (left), and 1.1, introduced several months later (right). Unlike usual revisions, which fix glitches, this one contains only one change: the font in the message boxes was made thicker.

In Super Mario Odyssey, New Donkers become increasingly more transparent the closer they are to the camera, making it impossible to closely examine their faces in-game. Extracting the models from the data, we can see their faces in maximum detail.

A Japanese print ad for Super Mario Bros. 3 shows an obscured pre-release screenshot of a sky level that has a gradient effect on top of the screen, absent from the finished game (left). I have attempted to recreate the gradient inside a level from the release version (right).

Officially licensed 1990 bottle of Mario shampoo from Japan. The bottle has six sides and features four segments that can be rotated relative to each other to create mashups from six different illustrations of Mario characters.

Bowser Jr. almost never wears any clothing outside of his bandana. His "Dr. Bowser Jr." model used in Dr. Mario World has a removable coat and shell, allowing an unobstructed view of him in regular clothing from all sides.

In Super Mario Odyssey, the Lake Kingdom is populated by the female-only Lochladies (left). The Art of Super Mario Odyssey book states the original concept for the Seaside Kingdom population was male counterparts to Lochladies called Mermen (right). These were replaced by snails.

A pre-release screenshot of Paper Mario shows a bed without a blanket (left). In the finished game, all Toad House beds have blankets (middle). By modifying the game's code, we can see what Mario sleeping in the bed would look like if the blanket were removed (right).
