In the data of Yoshi's Island, there are two alternate unused versions of Yoshi with a full mouth (left: used in game, middle and right: unused). It is unknown if these were simply early graphics or remnants of a mechanic where Yoshi could eat much larger objects than usual.

Two of the Super Mario Odyssey bosses are supposed to be grotesque mechanical versions of regular enemies. This is obvious with the Mechawiggler; however, Torkdrift's Japanese name indicates it is a mechanical version of a Spindrift enemy from Super Mario 64.

In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, the temporary follower characters are entirely interchangeable. When brought to an event, a wrong follower will simply act like the correct one without crashing the game. Here are the Yoshi Egg acting as Frankly and Punio acting as Flavio.

A pre-release screenshot of the Waluigi Stadium track in Mario Kart: Double Dash shows that in that version, the audience consisted of countless Marios, Luigis, Warios and Waluigis. This was removed in the finished game, likely due to these characters being supposedly unique.

The internal names used for the characters in the code of Mario Kart 64. Of particular interest is Luigi being called "Luizi"; this game is the only instance of him being referred to with this spelling.

In Super Mario 64 DS, getting crushed while holding a coin box while on low health will both kill the character and restore some health through the coins. This traps the character indefinitely in a state of simultaneously being dead and alive, requiring the game to be reset.

Near the lighthouse in Delfino Plaza in Super Mario Sunshine, there is an alcove blocked with goop that requires Yoshi to clear. Going into first-person view in the alcove reveals that due to a texture error, it is lined with many tiny doors and windows.

One official Mario Kart DS render features characters driving around a globe. For an unknown reason, Yoshi's model in this render has a much smaller nose than in other artwork for the game.

Promotional photo of Nintendo of America founder and former president Minoru Arakawa playing the Game Boy on a chair with a Mario decoration.

In Super Mario 64, holding R in the "Lakitu/Stop" camera mode allows Mario to get arbitrarily far away from the camera. Doing it in a course with atmospheric fog, like Jolly Roger Bay or Tick Tock Clock, shows that Mario's model is not affected by fog and always remains visible.

In Super Mario Bros. 2, if a Subspace door is positioned over a patch of grass and the player character plucks it quickly after exiting Subspace, the plucked object will be worn on the character's head instead of carried. Details in image.

Goombella is the only character from the original pre-Sticker Star Paper Mario continuity to be referenced in both Paper Mario: Sticker Star (left, on a note in Level 5-1) and in Paper Mario: Color Splash (right, the Pry Guy enemy's book is identical to her Tattle Log).

During a visit to Frankfurt, Germany in 2004, a correspondent of the British NGC magazine has asked randomly chosen German citizens on the street to draw Mario and Yoshi; he mentions that to his surprise, most people knew the characters in question. Here are their drawings.

In a 2013 Year of Luigi interview, Shigeru Miyamoto has stated that he would be open to creating another brother for Mario and Luigi in the future.

In Mario Party 7, Mario uses a larger than usual texture for his irises during the Ghost in the Hall minigame, presumably since he is scared (left: normal irises, right: during the minigame). Due to the split screen, this is hard to see without increasing the internal resolution.

The data for Super Mario RPG includes an unused enemy mind-reading message: "I REALLY hate males...!" The game contains many unused enemies, but it is likely the message belongs to one of the eight pictured here, as they do not already have other messages assigned to them.

To date, Super Paper Mario is the only game that explicitly allows Mario to eat the flesh of his fallen enemies. When the mammoth-like Muth enemies are defeated, they sometimes turn into Bone-In Cuts, pieces of meat that Mario can consume.
918
In the Hide and Sneak minigame in Mario Party 3, the characters are shown running between the different hiding places. This is entirely misdirection on part of the game, as the running animation is independent of both player input and location and thus is best entirely ignored.

In Super Mario 64, the door in the mirror room in Peach's Castle is not reflected properly. Both the real door and the door in the mirror have their handles on the same side. The game attempts to mask this by putting the doors in alcoves below the floor, making this hard to see.

In the Yoshi Wings bonus sections in Super Mario World, Yoshi loses his wings whenever he sticks out his tongue. The effect is not merely visual; during this, Yoshi is in uncontrollable freefall for about half a screen (middle) until he regains his wings (right).

The back of the Japanese box for Mario Party 3 shows the game's playable characters as board game pieces with stiff poses. As a consequence, this is the only existing official render of Waluigi standing up completely straight, as his knees are bent in all other artwork.
922
In Super Mario 64, by jumping slightly off the edge of the Bowser battle arenas, Bowser can be tricked into jumping after Mario. If Bowser falls off the platform, he will never return. The camera will zoom out and show Mario alone in the arena until he exits the level or dies.

The Brothers Bear from Donkey Kong Country 3 do not exist as distinct sprites in the game's data. Instead, every bear is created by taking a generic "base bear" sprite, recoloring it, then superimposing details specific to that bear on it to save space on the cartridge.

The Spike Traps in the Super Mario World underwater style in the Super Mario Maker games are actually Sea Urchins from The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, which are based on the Gordos from Kirby's Dream Land. Thus, they are a Mario version of a Zelda version of a Kirby enemy.

In Super Mario 64 DS, if Yoshi throws an egg immediately before jumping on a Spindrift or Fly Guy (left), he will bounce off with one arm outstretched (middle). He will continue to hold his arm in that position throughout all animations until A is pressed (right).
