The European version of Super Mario Bros. is almost imperceptibly more difficult than the US/Japanese versions due to adding an extra pixel to the hitboxes of various enemies. Details in image.

In Super Mario Odyssey, the waterfall in the Cascade Kingdom has a spot where the water refraction effect is applied incorrectly, leading distorted images of Mario to appear next to him, visible in Snapshot Mode. A slideshow of examples is included.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, if Yoshi grabs another player, but that player mashes every button with immense speed nearly impossible for a human, the game will freeze. Details in image.

In Super Mario 64, if Mario surfs on a Koopa shell into this gap in Lethal Lava Land, he will be stuck underneath the platform. Despite touching lava, he will take no continuous damage. However, after a few seconds, a failsafe will activate and Mario will simply vanish, dying.

In Super Mario Odyssey, clipping out of bounds will allow Mario to fall an infinite distance. This slowly corrupts the pause screen due to the rendering mathematics not being designed to handle large distances; the longer Mario falls, the more distorted his face becomes.

In Super Mario 64 DS, a glitch can cause Yoshi to explode when shot out of a cannon. When entering a cannon with a Bob-omb in his mouth, Yoshi will be safe while inside the cannon and in mid-air, but will explode upon impact with the ground.

In Super Mario Odyssey, whenever Mario stands behind ice, his image is distorted to simulate light refraction. However, in specific spots, the distortion effect is mistakenly applied when Mario is next to the ice rather than behind it (note the asymmetrical legs).
733
In Super Mario 64, the surfaces Mario can run up at a steep angle, such as the pillars in Shifting Sand Land, do not interact properly with Mario's crawling animation. If the Control Stick is pushed in different directlions while crawling, Mario's model will flail around wildly.

Normally, getting hit while on Yoshi in Super Mario World will not harm Mario. However, there are three very specific exceptions: a Dino Torch's flames (not the Dino Torch itself), a Mega Mole on flat ground (not on slopes), and eating a Wiggler at high speed (safe at low speed).

A series of 1992 Mario pachinko game rewards from Japan has a particular focus on Blue Baby Yoshi, containing a Blue Baby Yoshi pool toy, Blue and Yellow Baby Yoshi erasers and a pin of Mario throwing a Blue Baby Yoshi into the air with the caption "FUTURE WORLD".

In Snowman's Land in Super Mario 64, a coin is mistakenly placed inside a wall. However, by shooting Mario out of a cannon in a precise spot, it can still be collected (note the coin collecting sound and the coin counter increasing after Mario hits the wall).

Close-up look at the artwork found only on the Super Leaf pouch sold exclusively at the Nintendo Tokyo store. While Tanooki Mario uses pre-existing artwork, Kitsune Luigi, Tanooki Peach and Tanooki Toad are original drawings.

A series of 1986 Super Mario Bros. manga featured a design for Princess Peach that was roughly based on her sprite as seen at the end of Super Mario Bros. (insert, middle).

According to internal filenames, the Luigi ghost that challenges the player in Super Mario Galaxy 2 is not actually Luigi, as all his files refer to him as Mario, even ones blatantly using Luigi's assets. Note that the actual Luigi's files refer to him as Luigi.

Clearing the Special Zone in Super Mario World provides an extra bit of added difficulty. Normally, Buzzy Beetles shake before starting to move after being stunned. However, after beating the Special Zone, they start to move without shaking, providing no warning to the player.

In Super Mario 64, entering the Lakitu/Stop camera mode, holding R and pressing C-Up allows Mario's head to be moved like in first-person view. Moving his head down and to the side reveals that his nose clips through his arm, which cannot be seen in regular first-person view.

In Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, a glitch can be used to sell any item for the regular selling price of any other (potentially much more expensive) item, allowing immense amounts of profit to be made. Details in image.

In Super Mario Sunshine, random spots in various levels have glitched collision that, if Mario sidesteps onto the spot, will teleport Mario to the bottom of the map, killing him instantly.

1986 Super Mario Bros. figurine capsule machines in Japan contained this series of three extremely rare figurines: the "Mysterious Occult Super Mario Bros.", consisting of "Villainous Mario" (left), "Villainous Lakitu" (middle) and "Villainous Toad" (right).

Unused scene from the North American commercial for Mario Party 4, depicting Yoshi's, Peach's and Luigi's reaction to Mario skiing from a roof. In the broadcast version of the commercial, this scene was replaced with a cut to the game's logo and a crashing sound.

In Super Mario 64, sliding near a baby penguin will make it slide, as well. If Mario is trapped in a sliding animation, it is revealed that the penguin will keep sliding for as long as Mario is sliding. In addition, if it crosses the edge of the pond, it will jump while sliding.

In Paper Mario: The Origami King, the Vellumentals are deities that have been folded into origami (left). While their unfolded forms are not shown in gameplay, the Water Vellumental's original form can be seen in the concept art gallery (right, extracted from the game's files).

I have discovered what I believe is one of the most obscure references in a Mario game: the character Mattel from The Legendary Starfy 4 appears for a single frame in a rare animation at an extremely small resolution in Super Princess Peach. Details in image.

The final Super Mario World manga, released in 1992, takes place after the events of Super Mario World. Here, Yoshi has officially become part of the Mario Bros. and has received his own yellow cap with a "Y" emblem. Unfortunately, no such cap has ever appeared in any games.

In New Super Mario Bros. U/Deluxe, standing still near one of the small yellow butterflies will make it land on the character. For the Toads and Luigi, the butterfly will land on their mouths; for Mario, it will land on his nose. The butterfly will never land on Nabbit.
