A developer oversight in Paper Mario: Color Splash can result in Mario being locked into a battle that he can only escape from by using up all his cards, which in the worst-case scenario takes up to 99 turns of watching Mario shrug as his attack misses. Details in image.

There is a single Star Bit in Super Mario Galaxy that spawns only when the game is not played in widescreen.

In Luigi's Mansion 3, whenever the Strobulb is used on ghosts, the light in their eyes shrinks for three frames. Ghosts are usually too far away from the camera for this to be noticeable; however, it is possible to use the Strobulb during certain cutscenes, making it visible.

In Super Mario Sunshine, there is a small invisible slope at a dock near the Noki Bay entrance in Delfino Plaza. This results in Mario appearing to randomly raise his legs if placed in a specific spot. Pressing R or L to change Mario's stance deforms his legs even further.

Normally, Toads do not have necks (left). However, in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, the model for the Propeller Toads has a fully modeled and textured neck, unlike all other Toad models (right). In-game, the neck is pushed into the head and is not visible (middle).

In Paper Mario: Color Splash, Mario restores color to colorless NPCs as part of the story. However, there is unused code for black paint, which drains their colors instead. As doing that is considered evil in that universe, this could hint at a scrapped "villainous Mario route".

It is easy to assume that the Boomerang Flower power-up was inspired by the Boomerang Bro enemy. However, according to Super Mario 3D Land director Koichi Hayashida, it was actually inspired by Pom Pom instead. Details in image.

The 1991 Nintendo Power calendar contained this "Welcome to the Warp Zone" illustration, featuring an original Mario render. As the illustration is printed across two pages, I have retouched the scan to unify it into a mostly seamless image.

The original Japanese names for Buzzy Beetle, Spiny and Spike Top indicate that the latter is a crossbreed between the former two. This is also visible in the Spike Top's visual design; however, the portmanteau name and crossbreed aspect is lost in all other localizations.

In the Choco Mountain course in Mario Kart 64, there is a ledge that can be reached by jumping up a slope that, although it is flat, will cause the racer to tumble in place for over 30 seconds before being saved by Lakitu. Video of the full tumbling duration is provided.

In Super Mario Sunshine, hovering into this Red Electrokoopa in Pinna Park can result in Mario being instantly transported extremely high into the sky, hanging onto an invisible ceiling. This location is so high above Isle Delfino that falling back down takes over an hour.

An alternative way of entering the downtown area in Wet-Dry World in Super Mario 64 is to simply perform a jump and kick in the spot shown in the footage. Mario will get caught on the ledge and vibrate automatically all the way to the entrance to the downtown area.

In Super Mario 64, jumping onto this ledge in the lobby of Peach's Castle may cause Mario to become trapped in a perpetual stumbling state. Since Mario cannot move and the castle pause menu does not have an option to exit the level, the game must be reset to continue playing.

In the Mario Kart series, Toad's model has longer arms to allow him to properly use a steering wheel. The difference can be seen even within a single game: a Toad from the audience in Mario Kart 8 (left) has regular arms, while the playable Toad's (right) arms are visibly longer.

A demo version of Mario Kart: Double Dash found on a European GameCube multi-demo disc contains an early model for the Freezies seen on the Sherbet Land track, who have the word "COOL" in place of their mouths. Here is a comparison between the early and finished Freezies.

In Super Mario World, some levels contain bonus rooms where three blocks must be hit in a randomly determined order to get 1-Ups. With a Galoomba, the game can be cheated: any order will always register as correct if the blocks are hit by a Galoomba with a Cape Spin.

Mario Kart: Super Circuit is chronologically the last time Toad has ever had legs in official media, instead of having his feet connect directly to his torso. However, the only evidence of this comes from extremely low-resolution artwork (legs circled).

Last year, I attempted to get a closer look at the unique Snailicorn enemy from New Super Mario Bros. by increasing the game's internal resolution. Now, thanks to Models Resource member "lemurboy12", the model has been extracted, allowing us to finally see it from all sides.

Development files for Super Mario World contain sprites for Mario moving towards and away from the camera. He does so by assuming a unique transitional state between Small Mario and Super Mario, which is shown here in the middle alongside the two standard forms.

In Mario Party 7, Mario uses a larger than usual texture for his irises during the Ghost in the Hall minigame, presumably since he is scared (left: normal irises, right: during the minigame). Due to the split screen, this is hard to see without increasing the internal resolution.

The Wii can sometimes read a low-charge Wii Remote battery as being at 0% charge despite still functioning. If this happens in Super Mario Galaxy 2, the low battery warning will remain on the screen forever - even after replacing the battery - until the game is reset.

An officially licensed 1997 Super Mario quiz book from Germany mostly used official art for illustrations, but sometimes made minor edits for visual humor, such as the below illustration of Mario as a marsupial with a smaller Mario in his "pouch".

Officially licensed 1992 Japanese plush of the Mega Mole enemy from Super Mario World. The toy interprets the light coloration on the sprite's cheek, likely intended to be simple shading (left), as blush marks instead (right).

In Super Mario Sunshine, Piantas are not fully modeled, missing some of the polygons that are normally covered by their grass skirts. Their Mario Kart 8/Deluxe model, however, is fully modeled, allowing us to finally see their complete body shape.
