In Super Mario 64, collecting a star above an updraft will cause Mario to float in the wind indefinitely as control is taken away from the player, preventing Mario from escaping the updraft. The only actions the player can perform are moving the camera and turning off the game.

The code of Mario Kart DS contains ASCII artwork of the Small Mario sprite from Super Mario Bros., constructed using four different byte values standing for different colors. The original sprite has been superimposed over the relevant part of the code for demonstration.

On the title screen of Mario Paint, clicking the "R" plays a sound. That sound is actually a voice saying "Odnetnin", or "Nintendo" backwards. The footage below first plays the clip normally, then reverses it, and finally slows it down to hear the original "Nintendo" voice.

In a 1996 interview, Mario Kart 64 director Hideki Konno stated that the game was originally intended to have a "serious mode" without items, to appeal to hardcore racing fans. However, nearly all playtesters chose to play with items instead, leading to the mode being scrapped.
