In Super Mario 64, whenever Mario touches Bowser's tail, this is stored until the next time the player presses B. If Mario is anywhere close to Bowser at that time (even in front of him), this will cause Bowser's tail to teleport into Mario's hands, making the battle easier.

In Super Mario 64, if Mario catches Bowser in mid-air after he jumps back into the arena and then throws him into a bomb, the explosion will send Bowser flying offscreen. Despite this violent reaction, Bowser will not actually lose HP and continue as though nothing happened.

In Super Mario Odyssey, the Lake Kingdom is populated by the female-only Lochladies (left). The Art of Super Mario Odyssey book states the original concept for the Seaside Kingdom population was male counterparts to Lochladies called Mermen (right). These were replaced by snails.

Paper Mario: The Origami King is extremely wasteful with its graphics, saving many needless duplicates. For example, each Shy Guy color has its own "blank" version saved as a separate image file despite being identical to each other, with none of them even ending up being used.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, if Yoshi grabs another player, but that player mashes every button with immense speed nearly impossible for a human, the game will freeze. Details in image.

In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, whenever Mario runs for a few seconds, he will shift into a slightly faster speed. During this, there is a 1/18 chance of his animation becoming glitched so that he rotates his leg 360° through his body.

One of the winning entries from a 2014 drawing contest held by Nintendo for the Year of Luigi celebration, depicting a Luigi mask and Link's painful transformation into Luigi as a hypothetical scenario in The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.

In Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Captain Toad can defeat Boos by shining his headlamp at them. However, he is even more powerful in Super Mario Galaxy, where Boos die immediately upon touching him, regardless of whether he is shining his light at them.

The Art of Super Mario Odyssey book shows an early Mario model with extra detail on his shoes. This was not used for the game; however, the Nintendo Tokyo store features a Mario statue from 2019 with that detail, suggesting this model may be used for the next mainline Mario game.

Unlike in other 3D Mario games, the model for Peach's crown in Super Mario Sunshine is shaped like a spike that is embedded in her head. Left: the crown separated from Peach's body. Right: wireframe view showing the crown's spike inside Peach's head during gameplay.

In Super Mario 64, Spindrift enemies have small, surprised-looking mouths. Development files for the game show they originally had smiling mouths. The smiling mouths are still present in the finished version, merely overwritten with the final texture, and can be restored (right).

During the Mr. L battle in Chapter 4-4 of Super Paper Mario, if Mario grabs Mr. L, switches into 3D, throws him into 3D space, and switches back into 2D, Mr. L has no ways of attacking Mario or returning to 2D. Effectively, Mr. L is trapped in the third dimension indefinitely.

This old post has been gaining traction. Regrettably, it was incorrect; the artist never claimed it was concept art for the game. Although I deleted the post in accordance with my veracity policy almost immediately, screenshots of it continued to spread. twitter.com/soulx88/status…

Mario Party 7 (2005) has had the highest-resolution Toad mouth texture to date, even higher than Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (2014).

Two of the Super Mario Odyssey bosses are supposed to be grotesque mechanical versions of regular enemies. This is obvious with the Mechawiggler; however, Torkdrift's Japanese name indicates it is a mechanical version of a Spindrift enemy from Super Mario 64.

On this slope in Gelato Beach in Super Mario Sunshine, the ground is coded to be walkable on one side and slippery on the other side of an invisible boundary. Sidestepping alongside it will make Mario oscillate extremely quickly while emitting a barrage of "whoa" and "ha" sounds.

There is an unused stage in the files of Super Princess Peach that consists of a room filled with 256 Sad Goombas. As the game cannot handle displaying that many Sad Goombas at once, it immediately lags, and if enough time is spent with the Sad Goombas on screen, will crash.

In the code of Super Mario Maker, names for five unused Costume Mario transformations remain. Below is a list of them and what they most likely would have turned Mario into.

Super Mario World contains an unused "reaction sprite" for Yoshi, in which he appears shocked or suprised. Below is a mock-up of Yoshi reacting to an in-game event using the sprite.

The Target department store chain is known for the distinctive red cement spheres, called bollards, in front of their buildings. In 2017, as part of a Mario Kart 8 Deluxe promotion, the bollards were briefly decorated to look like Mario and Luigi heads.
