Yesterday marked the centennial of the Taiwan parliament movement. In 1921 civic leaders went to Tokyo to propose a local elected council, a milestone in our struggle for self-government. Then we were under a colonial power, today as a country we face new challenges and threats.

Chinese fighter jets continue to endanger peace. Facing the pandemic over the last year, humanity has met the challenge with cooperation and compassion. It is disgraceful that China has used this time to step up its military aggression against the Taiwanese people.

Taiwan and Japan have much in common. We not only suffer earthquakes often, we also face economic and geopolitical threats from a totalitarian power. Like #India, #Australia, #Palau, and other regional partners, #Japan is a solid friend. Friends need to help each other.

For Taiwan, #India is not only a geopolitical power but also a key economic partner. Growing bilateral investment and people to people exchanges is in both our countries' interests. Let us keep rising together, two strong nations joined by trust and mutual respect.

Today marks the first anniversary since President Tsai and I were elected to serve. Taiwan is beautiful. We hold elections and respect the outcome win or lose. On the front line against totalitarianism, Taiwanese are defending democracy with our lives.

Taiwan is a country and a trusted partner, we deserve to be treated as such. We welcome @SecPompeo's decision to lift restrictions on interactions between the US and TW. Normalizing relations with the US and other countries is the wish and best interest of the Taiwanese people.

China’s crackdown on democracy will not be ignored by the world. More than 50 prominent democratic advocates were arrested today in Hong Kong. This is unacceptable, HKers’ rights are human rights.
134
China significantly amended its National Defense Law, effective Jan 1st. Taiwan is clearly a target. We will continue to seek a peaceful path, while strengthening our defense. I want to thank the US for its bipartisan support for Taiwan in the National Defense Authorization Act.

When signing a trade deal with China you have to be careful. You only see what you can get, not what you might lose. It’s not only about Uyghurs and labor rights, there is something deeper that goes to the heart of democracy. This was a lesson Taiwan learned in recent decades.

Becoming a bilingual nation by 2030 is our goal. Fluency in English and Mandarin will make Taiwanese society more open and dynamic. Taiwan is transforming into a country more welcoming to immigrants, and more willing to engage with the world.

Democracy will win.

No country thinking about an alliance of democracies should forget Taiwan. We know China.
139
For us Taiwanese, democracy is the basic principle. Facing a totalitarian China, we know that an alliance of democracies is essential for the future.

China says they would “consider” joining CPTPP. First they should "consider" honoring international rules and standards. It would be a mistake to compromise regional security with untrustworthy partnerships. This is something we need to seriously "consider".

With respect to the U.S. election, we naturally don’t take a side. Our only side is Taiwan.

We should never have to fear being ourselves. Today in Taiwan we celebrate LGBT Pride 🏳️‍🌈 We still have a long way to go, but we are leaders in Asia in marriage rights and gender equality. This is something all Taiwanese can feel proud of. #TaiwanPride

Chinese representatives acting like angry little emperors is the new normal. The assault of a Taiwanese diplomat in Fiji last week is only the latest example. We will not sink to their level, we will keep doing what we do.
144
Democracy is worth fighting for. That’s what we Taiwanese believe.
145
Before claiming to oversee human rights issues around the world, China should address its own severe abuses at home and against foreigners. Innocent Taiwanese citizens are being accused of political crimes, sentenced without due process, and imprisoned. This needs to stop.

Thank you Vice President Saylici @VPsomaliland for your warm message. I hope we can meet in person in Hargeisa someday soon, and chat over a cup of shaah cadays. twitter.com/VPsomaliland/s…

Proud to see our flag fly high and be recognized all over the world. We thank the people from so many countries who today expressed congratulations and support. Especially our Indian friends. Namaste! #TaiwanNationalDay #JaiHind #MilkTeaAlliance

Last evening, on the eve of #TaiwanNationalDay, China again sent warplanes to provoke us. But this won’t stop today’s ceremony. It won’t keep us from protecting peace and stability in the region.

Within 30 years Taiwan has gone from a one-party dictatorship to an open democratic system. The R.O.C. was re-born here. The Taiwanese people made it better, more beautiful, stronger. I am proud to serve as VP and contribute to this ongoing transformation. #TaiwanNationalDay

Glad to see President Trump doing well the video he released. Wishing his recovery continues on this path, our thoughts are with him and the American people.
