Out today, the latest episode of BBC’s The Compass radio documentary series spends close to half of its running time in Hong Kong (PolyU and HKU) to discuss the issue of free speech and its limitations on university campuses. bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/w3…

An elected official with HK’s Democratic Party has been arrested in the middle of the night. Pro-democracy legislator Ted Hui just said Cheng is accused of forwarding details of a police officer online, which he called an abuse of the power of office to avenge personal vendettas. twitter.com/HKDemocrats/st…

The Hong Kong police officer who recently tested positive for coronavirus refused to wear a mask as requested when she was getting her blood work done, according to reports. Now, two hospital workers who helped her are being tested for the virus after showing symptoms.

I was very on the fence about sharing that story about @WHO Director-General @DrTedros blaming Taiwanese for all the criticism levied at his organisation, due to the flimsy attribution—but considering the attitude of his senior advisor here, that story is looking more credible... twitter.com/ezracheungtoto…

As domestic production of masks continues to climb, Taiwan’s mask rationing system will get another upgrade next week. People will be able to buy 9 masks every 2 weeks online then collect them at convenience stores. They’ll also be able to send up to 30 abroad every two months.

Hong Kong’s Commerce and Economic Development Bureau is now engaging in a political struggle session against the city’s most trusted news service, public broadcaster @rthk_enews, after journalist @yvonne_tg questioned a top @WHO official about the UN agency’s exclusion of Taiwan. twitter.com/creery_j/statu…

Hard to imagine this isn’t a nod to the #HongKongProtests. An exhibition on the 30th anniversary of Taiwan‘s pro-democracy Wild Lilly student movement by Liberty Square speaks of a new “Five Demands”—just like Hong Kong’s—for the new Legislative Yuan voted into power in January.

What if the @WHO isn't a corrupt cabal maliciously misleading the world to defend the CCP, and is just a timid, flaccid bureaucracy too crippled by the competing interests of its own member states to offer any practical let alone moral leadership during a rapidly evolving crisis.

The most fascinating thing about #nnevvy is seeing how deeply wumao have internalised the people-party equivalency and how ineffective that tack is against people secure enough to welcome criticism of their gov't. Maybe it'll spur a few of the NMSL trolls to look in the mirror. twitter.com/GraceChiao27/s…

Yet another day of mass arrests of pro-democracy politicians and activists in Hong Kong unfolding today. Over 2 dozen people rounded up by Hong Kong police including 82-year-old Martin Lee, @appledaily_hk’s Jimmy Lai, @chrf_hk’s Jimmy Sham, and @loktinau. today.line.me/HK/article/MYw…

Even McDonald’s in Taipei is now advertising using the phrase「缺一不可」made famous by the #HongKongProtests’ chant「五大訴求,缺一不可」(“five demands, not one less”). Unlike McDonald’s HK, owned by China’s CITIC Capital, McDonald’s Taiwan franchise is owned by a local firm.

So proud to have won the Human Rights Press Award for Investigative Feature Writing for our work examining the Hong Kong Police Force's misconduct and ongoing unaccountability. It was an honour to work with @ShibaniMahtani, @TMclaughlin3 and Tiffany Liang on this important story. twitter.com/rhokilpatrick/…

This on the same day as dozens of armed police were sweeping through nearby IFC mall, pepper spraying people to prevent small groups of would-be protesters from gathering. One Country, Two Systems may be dying but One City, Two Systems is alive and well. hk.appledaily.com/local/20200509… twitter.com/iainmarlow/sta…

Plans for the new, $600m, publicly-funded Police Officers’ Club in Causeway Bay, acquired by @appledaily_hk, make the Royal HK Yacht Club next door look slummy–and come as top brass are being investigated for mansions illegally constructed on public land. thestandnews.com/politics/%E8%9…

Aegis 保護傘 is a cafe created to offer jobs and work visas to Hong Kong protesters who fled to Taiwan. Located just opposite NTU at 新生南路三段70巷, it offers a mixed menu of pasta dishes plus classics like 西多士 and菠蘿油, as well as free books and pamphlets on the protests.

For years we’ve been awaiting that Sword of Damocles moment when we can declare HK dead, wondering if it might be better than these years of 滴水穿石 erosion during which we're gaslit, told we’re overreacting to every incremental drip. Tonight the sword may have finally dropped. twitter.com/SCMPNews/statu…

In the lobby of Taipei Main Station, a flash mob to support Hong Kong—as it faces the effective demise of One Country, Two Systems—is about to begin.

Feels like far too long since I’ve heard this sung: #HongKongProstests anthem “Glory to Hong Kong”.

“The CCP is attempting to strengthen its control over HK with the National security law but I know that both our brothers and sisters in HK and our friends in Taiwan who love freedom and democracy won’t be deterred,” says a HK student currently studying in Taiwan.

Beijing’s move to promulgate a nat’l security law for HK constitutes an “all-out assault on basic human rights” and a ploy to seize total control, says the organiser. “Taiwanese people and the gov’t cannot stay aloof. We will stand together with HK and oppose China’s tyranny.”

Tear gas fired on Hong Kong protesters marching between Causeway Bay and Wan Chai to oppose national security legislation that threatens to end One Country, Two Systems. The first tear gas of the post-COVID season and what will not only be a long day but another summer of rage.

In a message just posted on Facebook. Taiwan’s Pres. Tsai @iingwen says she will consider invoking article 60 of the Regulations Governing Relations with HK and Macau to institute “necessary emergency measures” to help Hongkongers if the city’s situation continues to deteriorate.
198
Article 60 stipulates that part or all of the Regulations may be scrapped if Hong Kong’s situation materially changes (e.g. if the NPC bypasses LegCo to pen a National security law for HK, invalidating 1C2S). This could open the way for offering refuge to protesters fleeing HK.

This is what Hong Kong already looks like *without* a national security law. twitter.com/ShibaniMahtani…

A message circulated by the admin in this HK protest Telegram group recalls the names of Black Americans killed by police violence in recent years before concluding: “If we turn a blind eye to the suffering of others... we have no right to ask others to care about our suffering.”
