The running Unit-01 in Eva2.0 is full CG, but when Anno first saw the rough footage, he wasn't satisfied.
He got Takeshi Honda to draw some rough key frames, and made the CG animator redo the animation, matching the shape and movement of the frames one by one. twitter.com/hitasuraeiga/s…

On End of Evangelion's infamous "hate mail sequence":
Using actual fan letters would have caused legal problems, so the letters shown in the film were actually written by staff.
As for the hate mail specifically, it was written by an old friend of Anno.

Even Eva-01 was redrawn for Death & Rebirth. Like Rei, I think she looks much better in Death & Rebirth.
