It's a passionate debate. If you are still wondering whether we should treat China (under CCP's control) as an adversary or a partner, please listen to it. @intelligence2 Debate: It’s Time to Treat China Like an Adversary not a Partner youtu.be/OVJrtzbK4zE via @YouTube

#SummitForDemocracy Intersession Remark: We must leverage all we have to ensure that democracy’s revival is our top priority. Dedicate this speech to all my friends in Hong Kong. @POTUS

//China wants its authoritarian model to spread around the world, but those Chinese voices for democracy show how precious self-government is and how people are willing to fight for it even at great personal risk. // Who’s Afraid of Nathan Law? China wsj.com/articles/whos-…

Friends in #NA: “#Freedom” is out now. Reflecting on my #SummitforDemocracy remark, it's surely a timely read. The story of Hong Kong is narrated through my life. It is a touching, warm, and insightful touch on why we should protect freedom and democracy. bit.ly/Freedom-Book

The upcoming voting for legislators in Hong Kong is a “selection.” Only ~20% of the seats are popularly contested and candidates were vetted by political police. Figures representing people have no hope of running. We should boycott the SELECTION— asking it is ILLEGAL in HK now

A powerful piece from my friend @joshrogin on why we should help Hong Kong exiled democratic activists. @SunnyCheungky @jooeysiiu @hkdc_us @hk_watch // Their struggle could last decades. We must show them they are not fighting alone.// #StandwithHongKong washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/…

“Candidates are thoroughly screened by political police and they had to have support from pro-Beijing politicians. The popularly elected seats have drastically reduced to only 20%. We should not give any legitimacy to this election by voting.” aje.io/4ehswu

We're not helping govt to redefine democracy. //Despite the ubiquitous advertisements from the government, election sentiment in the public has never felt so low. People do not want to vote for a rubber-stamp chamber and pretend everything is all right.// nytimes.com/2021/12/18/opi…

The "fake election" of Hong Kong made it to the headlines. Less than a quarter of the seats in legislature are voted among ALL pro-Beijing candidates. The boycott from Hong Kong people shows there's no mandate to this legislature. Beijing is unhappy. bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0b…

Publishing #Freedom means a lot to me. I’ve been trying different ways to raise awareness for the Hong Kong protests. Depicting it from personal insight and making it easy to read for international audiences has always been part of the goals -- “Freedom” indeed achieved it.

When free press is the focal point of human rights discussion this year, CCP keeps charging journalists and media that dare to challenge them and speak the truth. Among many others, the arrests of Denise Ho, Margaret Ng are prime examples. RELEASE THEM! theguardian.com/world/2021/dec…

2. In mainland China, all media outlets are controlled by party branches. Now, this trend is extended to Hong Kong. What's worth noticing is the charge the government used -- "conspiracy to publish seditious publications." It has never been used for more than five decades.
1016
THREAD: 1.After the Apple Daily closure, Stand News became the largest free media in Hong Kong. Today, we have witnessed another forced closure with a number of arrests. The message Beijing sends is clear: report in the way that we allow, or end up in jail.
1017
3. It's a colonial law so draconian that the British colonial government ended up abandoning it. The HKG reversed the trend and used it to arrest journalists arbitrarily. Seven former and current editors and board members are arrested, with more than 200 police raid their office.
1018
4. The police held a press conference and explained that as long as the articles trigger hatred towards the government, whether it's a news piece or a blogger's opinion post, it could violate the law. It means that gov's scandals and problems are not allowed to be exposed.
1019
5. Then we must ask: what's left in Hong Kong's press freedom? What does journalism mean if journalists cannot report what the government does not like? It will only become propaganda. And propaganda is the opposite of press freedom.

6. I hope it does not create a domino effect that other smaller independent outlets also disband. The only thing I want the world to do is to publish. To publish about Hong Kong. To publish about the brave journalists that risk so much. We can do something for Hong Kong.
1021
7. Let's not forget who are arrested. Denise Ho, a Hong Kong canto-pop diva who has been very vocal on LGBTQI rights and social justice. She could have lived a prosperous and fancy life if she had stayed silent. But she didn't. Wealth cannot buy out one's faith and values.

9. Many more are facing political suppression, and we must extend our support to them as much as we can. Please spread the word on the erosion of freedom in HK. It's our beloved home, and it was once the freest city in Asia. Now, everything we were once proud of are gone. -END

8. Margaret Ng, a former legislator and well respected barrister. She is 73 and continues to campaign for a better judicial system in Hong Kong. Many political campaigners see her as a role model and the most powerful voice to preserve our values.
