Central and Eastern European countries should seriously consider withdrawing their participation in 17+1. It’s a significant hindrance in forging a unified EU approach to the CCP and providing them a great window to divide and conquer. Values always come first.

Hongkongers who genuinely believe in democracy and human rights are with the protestors in Myanmar. Military coup takes away people's legitimate democratic rights and damages the country's interest to benefit a few demagogues. We demand democracy now.

THREAD:
1. @ForeignPolicy published an article by former special assistant to President Ronald Reagan @Doug_Bandow, suggesting a more engaging policy to China. Since he mentioned my comments, I'd like to respond to a few of his points on the grand strategy to China.

Wish everyone a great year of Ox and good health! Hope that suppressed activists in China, Xinjiang and Hong Kong can be free soon. The true happiness comes from a peaceful mind and the pursuit of justice. Democracy prevails!

cowrote it with @benedictrogers , in solidarity with the protestros in #Myanmar. Democracies should come together to defend our common values in the face of rising tyrannies.

People should be reminded more broadly about the threats and dangers of autocracies. Mistakenly claiming China as an "ally" shows the understanding of the nature of CCP is generally lacking, even for people who should be well informed. Something fundamental is missing. twitter.com/NBCNews/status…

Friends from #MilkTeaAlliance and democratic countries, I think all of you should be concerned with the latest developments in #Myanmar:
Mass military presence, firing at citizens, internet cutoff… A potential massacre is happening.
Let's keep tweeting and supporting them.

I have personally met many Myanmar activists from my previous effort on enhancing understandings and friendships among Asian activists. I wish them safe -- same to the rest of the population who are fighting for democracy. Extremely heart-broken to have witnessed the development
715
Many journalists and foreign citizens I met were shocked by the Juen 4th Massacre in Beijing. People in Myanmar are very worried that the exact same thing will happen in their country. Tanks, soldiers are everywhere and information is extremely limited.

For those unable to help the protestors in Myanmar physically, there is at least one thing you can do:
TREND #WhatsHappeningInMyanmar and #SaveMyanmar in your country by simply type it while you share the information. You can also click on the tags to know more. RETWEET.

Let's talk about the ways to deal with CCP. twitter.com/RyanShorthouse…

Credible sources revealed that the Myanmar military government is receiving “technical support” from the CCP to build similar internet firewalls to block access to Twitter, NYT, FB etc. The internet cutoff serves this need.
Dictators help each other and CCP is leading the way.

We can all ask our friends in telecom industry to verify it. It's important that we can have information on what's happening in there and try to act in advance to protect citizens there. It's a long process to build an internet firewall -- the free world should act immediately.

1. This article aims at encouraging a global approach to tackle the democracy crisis. The decline of democracy has been ongoing for almost two decades, and many people suffer. It's time for us to rethink our approach to defend our democratic values.
