We need more MEP on board. //The investment agreement must be ratified by the European Parliament before it can take effect, and it faces signification opposition that could derail it.// With Concessions and Deals, China’s Leader Tries to Box Out Biden nytimes.com/2021/01/03/wor…

BREAKING: HK activists & politicians are arrested under "subversion" due to their participation in pro-democracy camp's primary election. When one of the most critical Senate races is ongoing in the US, in HK, participation in elections could lead to life-long imprisonment.

@AlvinYeungnk , @KwaiLamHo , @LesterShum and many other primary election candidates are arrested. @joshuawongcf is in jail and cannot update his status through social media, but it is believed that he is also facing national secutiy law charge. Please support them. #StandwithHK
656
The logic behind the arrests could possibly be: paricipating democratic camp primary election= fighting for Legco majority= subverting the state power The way autocracy thinks is terrifying. The world has to react and hold the CCP accountable. #StandwithHK
657
In response to Hong Kong's political crackdown, I urge the European Parliament to halt the EU-China investment deal and EU to sanction China&HK officials who are responsible to the arrests. #Retweet if you agree MEP should VETO the bill and EU should act. #StandwithHongKong

This is a COMPLETELY WRONG comparison. The protestors in Hong Kong are fighting for legitimate demands of democracy and freedom. They stormed into a symbol of autocracy and political persecution. I don't think you want to equate the congress in Hong Kong to the US. twitter.com/willripleyCNN/…

The latest update of my dearest friend @joshuawongcf: being treated as the most serious felon, escorted with shackles and chains. He was sentenced 13.5 months last month due to joining a peaceful assembly, and now facing NSL prosecution, which can lead to life-long imprisonment.

THREAD: 1. In the past few days, some compared the storming to the Hong Kong Legislative Council to the chaos in Capitol hill. It's the WRONG comparison. Several scenes on 1st July 2019, one of the monumental days of the protest movement, can help you tell the differences.
663
2. This photo shows signs written in Chinese: "Do not damage" (right), "Protect the historical relics."(left) in the building. The protestors had a very clear understanding of what they were targeting: they only damaged the symbols representing the authoritarian regime.
664
3. This is a display wall showing the pictures of the previous Presidents of the Legco. On the left side, the pictures of pro-Beijing presidents who served the interest of CCP were put down. The picture of Andrew Wong, who is considered more impartial and fair, was intact.
665
4. Outside the library, these two boards say: "Protect the books. No destruction.", "Don't mess up around here. We are not rioters."
666
5. In the cafeteria, the protestors reminded each other to pay for what they have taken. "I am sorry for bothering," "Pay at the basket =>." The basket in the fridge which the sign is pointing at was full of bills that the protestors left, when they took a can of soda out.
667
6. The protestors who entered the building were civilized and well-mannered. They were fighting for a better society and social justice. They were demanding an unelected government to implement a fair and open electoral system. These mark the differences. -END

VETO the EU-CHINA CAI. // Statements of concern and condemnation are not enough — and trade or investment agreements with autocracies are even worse. For Beijing, these signatures on agreements are green lights to continue their actions with impunity. // washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/…

Global issues, such as public health and climate change, should be seen as ways to boost cooperation between democracies and pressure authoritarian regimes. The incoming administration should not fall into the trap of believing the CCP’s empty promises. washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/…

Cab rank rule does not apply to foreign work, and the integrity of a QC will definitely be contaminated by assiting a political purge from an autocracy. I do hope that David Perry QC consider to withdraw from the case. twitter.com/JDP_Patterson/…

THREAD: 1. HKgov annouced new requirement on civil servants to pledge loyalty to Beijing's handpicked government. Civil servants who are “carrying out activities that endanger national security” will face punishments. It restrians their freedom of speech and polticial opinion.
675
4. More importantly, the government regards any oath violators as infringing the national security, who can be subject to additional political persecution under the NSL. In other words, using professionalism to go against controversial policies becomes a crime.
