In Super Mario Sunshine, whenever Mario is in a free fall state for an extended time, the model for his cap begins to undulate, likely to simulate the effect of strong wind. Due to the camera automatically zooming out when Mario is falling, this is very difficult to see in-game.

Illustration from an article speculating on potential future Mario games from the Spanish Hobby Consolas magazine, showing a concept of a cooking game called Mario World Pizzeria. The drawing includes a cameo appearance of Raphael from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

The official Nintendo Power guide for Super Mario 64 contradicts itself between the enemy glossary (top row) and the course guide (bottom row). It is possible the glossary was written for an earlier version of the game where enemies like the Mad Piano could in fact be defeated.

The North American commercial for Yoshi's Island DS contains an original 3D model of Baby Donkey Kong that is visible for less than 2 seconds during one scene. The model is distinct from the model later used in Mario Super Sluggers by having a smaller mouth.

Extremely rare 1993 "Cursed King of Pipe Land" plushie from Japan. In the Super Mario All-Stars version of SMB3, the king of Pipe Land is transformed into a Yoshi. As he is only seen for a few seconds, this is one of the most obscure characters receiving official merchandise.

In the Japanese/North American version of Super Mario Bros., Bloopers cannot affect Mario when he is standing on the seafloor. However, the European version modified the code to let them sink 4 pixels lower, so that Mario is no longer safe on the seafloor. Details in image.

A pre-release screenshot of Super Mario Bros. 3 from the Japanese Famimaga magazine shows Morton Koopa Jr. with a color scheme that makes him resemble Bowser. On the right is a recreation of the design using the finished game's Morton sprite and Bowser palette.

After dealing the final hit to King Boo in Super Mario Sunshine, he explodes into pink, orange or purple bubbles. The color depends on what fruit was thrown at him for the final hit; it corresponds to the color Yoshi would become when eating that fruit.

Promotional photo from a 1997 campaign by Nintendo of Europe in Germany that featured Mario teaching children about road traffic safety. Participants also received limited edition Super Mario bike helmets, as worn by the girl in the photo.

While most 3D games model the buttons on Mario's/Luigi's/Wario's/Waluigi's overalls as discs (left), the Mario & Sonic series has, since its beginning, modeled them as spikes embedded in their bodies. On the right is a model from Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

In the final shot of the credits of Super Mario Odyssey, Mario, Peach and Pauline appear next to each other (left). They are placed at slightly different distances from the camera to mask their size discrepancies. Actual relative sizes of their models can be seen on the right.

The packaging for the 1993 licensed "Radio Boy" features partial original artwork of Yoshi listening to the device. Using the source for the unmodified image (the 1993 game Mario & Wario), I attempted to restore the full version of the artwork.

Normally, the reflection in the mirror room of Peach's Castle in Super Mario 64 mimics Mario's movements perfectly. However, if Mario crawls towards one of the pillars, he will crawl up the side of it, while the reflection remains of the floor, breaking the synchronicity.

In the Look Away minigame in Mario Party 2, whenever one of the team players fails to look in a different direction from the single player, their head will shrink. While unlikely, it is possible to fail 5 times, causing the head to be minuscule (see DK to the left of Mario).

A 2007 Dr. Mario manga contains a very specific reference to Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door while being unrelated to the actual game. For one panel (left), Peach's Castle is drawn in the style of the storybook drawings from the game's intro (right).

Due to a bug in Version 2.0 of Super Mario Maker 2, objects stacked on a Spike are weightless. A Spike weighs as much as a Fire Flower, and behaves correctly when stacked on other objects, but if it is on the bottom of the stack, the entire stack weighs as much as one Spike.

Mario Kart Tour's low-polygon models, used for racers far away from the camera, have the lowest-resolution facial textures of all 3D Mario games to date, at 10x10 pixels.

In the data of Version 2.0 of Super Mario Maker 2, the Ninjis have accurate sprites for riding all ridable objects, except Yoshi, who is depicted as a generic wagon. Alongside a previous hint from the Russian text of the game, this suggests more ridable characters coming later.

Storyboard for a scene where Mario tries to ambush Bowser with a gun in the 1989 direct-to-video anime Super Mario Momotarō, alongside the same shots from the finished animation. The story is a loose adaptation of the Japanese folk tale Momotarō, or "Peach Boy".

In Yoshi's Island, when Baby Mario touches a Super Star to become Powerful Mario, Yoshi temporarily becomes an egg (left). A 1995 Yoshi's Island manga proposes the explanation that the star grants Baby Mario Yoshi's abilities so he turns Yoshi into an egg himself (right).

In Super Mario Odyssey, Mario has a unique finger-snapping animation when next to the trumpet and guitar players before recruiting them (left). After the band is formed, he will only perform his regular dance (right) and the snapping can never again be seen on the same save file.
