Hello! I'm a black woman living in Japan who works in translation and just officially debuted in the manga industry! I mainly draw humorous and/or lighthearted shoujo manga. This thread has past works I've done!

I’m going to break down the process of working on manga in Japan just because I got a few questions/realized that certain things I take for granted aren’t as universally known as I thought. Let’s start with what sort of job category it falls into:

SO IDOLISH7 IS ABOUT THIS 7 MEMBER IDOL GROUP WHO ONLY HAS 9 PEOPLE COME TO THEIR FIRST CONCERT BUT THEN WORK THEIR WAY TO THE TOP WHILE BEFRIENDING ALL THEIR RIVALS INCLUDING A GROUP WHOSE LEADER MOONLIGHTS AS A SOBA DELIVERY MAN WHILE BEING VOTED THE SEXIEST MAN OF THE YEAR AND

I live in Tokyo. I have become well versed in the ancient art called 厳正なる抽選の結果残念ながらチケットをご用意することができませんでした It means that luck is gifted to only a select few. To everyone else, there’s always the livestream. twitter.com/jamierusso/sta…

Not enough people know about Zekkyou Gakkyuu (both the original and the sequel series) It’s a shoujo horror manga published in Ribon that is mainly standalone oneshots. It really nails both horror and entertainment (particularly the shoujo elements) in a clever way
33
This oneshot is about a mangaka is told that his serialization is being canceled. Despite its dwindling popularity he sees that one fan has stuck with it the entire time, so he goes to see her…at an event where she’s selling a doujin of her fave BL pairing from his series twitter.com/shonenjump_plu…

A long, long time ago I drew a comic about a silly experience I had while studying in Kyoto in college.
37
The reason why the A I art discourse is so exhausting is because it’s actually the evolved version of the thing artists have been saying for years: Stop using and reposting art without permission. THAT is where the problem is. Not the tool itself.
38
How are y’all literally going to believe that the SxF mangaka hates his characters when Anya is literally a repurposed character from one of his previous manga? Here’s the thing: not all comic artists create completely from pure passion. Some create because they’re good at it.
39
Y’all don’t know how many English speakers within Japanese game companies have fought battles so some of the characters you love to this day don’t have incredibly stupid sounding names
40
Every time a game kicks the dust I become more and more against the concept of games being subsequently released on different servers. Can we please just make it a standard that games have different language options upon release?

This is a comic about a guy who lives in an AI generated world with an AI drawn girlfriend who tries hard to overcome her tendency to have effed up hands and eat ramen in increasingly horrific ways The MC’s name is 手垣 (Tegaki), which sounds like the word for “hand drawn” LOL twitter.com/h071019/status…

I just want you to know that getting Kazuki "Hakuouki" Yone to illustrate for the shitpost of an anime that is Pop Team Epic is the kind of energy I want to give with anything I create. Thank you

I have made my official mangaka debut on Hakusensha's app, Manga Park! For those who can download the app, check it out!

I'm procasting on something so here's some words commonly used in manga creation: a thread
45
PLEASE WATCH IDOLISH7
46
I wish that all your favorite games and manga are adapted into an anime with the care and love IDOLiSH7 has gotten
47
This is probably gonna get flattened in the already tiring AI discourse going on but I think it’s worth focusing on what Miyazaki actually took offense with here—not the technology, but the intent behind it. It’s further compounded by the silence that followed Suzuki’s question twitter.com/TofuPixel/stat…
48
What is your goal (the Japanese is literally, “where are you planning for this to lead to?”) Silence, followed by “we want to make a machine that can draw like a human does”. No talk about the message or intention behind that goal. No whys. No becauses. Just an end point.
49
And I think that’s where a lot of the frustration is coming from. Because a key part of art comes from those questions of “why”, and those answers of “because”, and an active choice to create something for a reason, not just to see how far it goes.
50
This is the key difference between technology and art, and it’s frustrating to see them conflated with each other because ideally, technology is there to aid or elevate art, and that requires thought and intention and humanity.
