Sorry to hear the luminous screen star Sylvia Syms has passed away. She was a magic link between many favourite British films: Ice Cold In Alex, No Trees In The Street, Expresso Bongo, Victim, The World Ten Times Over, Asylum and more. My sympathies to her family and loved ones x

I'm still writing Dolly De Leon on my ballot.

Here you go. Every film I watched in 2022. Tried to watch one for every day of the year and came up short (again). But, of course, the journey is worth it. Here's 292 films I did see in 2022. (NB: *Denotes a first time watch / + Denotes seen at the cinema) 1/2

As a Halloween treat for the 1st anniversary of @lastnightinsoho, check out this side by side of the Cafe De Paris single shot dance with 2 witness camera angles detailing the amazing choreography & camerawork. A scene like this doesn’t work without a great crew working together.

Was lucky to see @ROMAIN_GAVRAS's blistering ATHENA on a big screen. An astounding film, combining LA HAINE's incandescent rage with the how-the-fuck-did-they-shoot-this invention of I AM CUBA. The opening 11 minute shot is a masterpiece, and amazingly the rest keeps it up. Wow.

Thinking about @Criterion and those who have sadly lost their jobs yesterday. It's a peerless label & streaming channel, everyone who I've worked with there has been fantastic, so I hope those involved pull through and the staff who have left find new homes for their talents.

Every time there's a new PM take a shot.

It's cute that we still continue to make cinema, since the art form arguably peaked in 1996 when they released the US version of 'Rumble In The Bronx' and slapped Ash's 'Kung Fu' over the end credits.

We must also of course post this heroically badass clip from ‘The Supergrass’. RIP Robbie x twitter.com/edgarwright/st…

Left Park Chan Wook’s intoxicating DECISION TO LEAVE with my head spinning. How does he make films this gorgeous, with more care going into the inserts than most directors put into their entire career? Not just neo Hitchcock but perhaps the best San Francisco movie made in Korea.

RIP Mike Schank, the sweet funny soul at the heart of the extraordinary doc 'American Movie'. Me, Simon & Nick were obsessed with it and since they included Mike's home number on the DVD extras, we called him from London one night. If you've never seen it, please do immediately.

Tomorrow sees the release of 'Halloween Ends', but do you want to watch my video of Jamie Foxx dancing in the Michael Myers mask again right now? Of course you do x

Then, at the screening of @DarrenAronofsky's 'The Whale', I've never seen a more rapturous reception to an actor at LFF than when Brendan Fraser stepped onstage. This is before they saw the film. Afterwards, he could have crowdsurfed out and be handed the Oscar on the Southbank.

Paddy Considine is one of our finest working actors, but his greatest performance? It’s not in ‘Hot Fuzz’, but is in the making of documentary where he remained in character as DC Andy Wainwright. See here where he talks about what he thinks of the esteemed ensemble cast..

Con Il Maestro, Dario Argento!! One of my all time favourite directors. Am in (giallo) heaven. Thank you @sitgesfestival x

Had a blast watching @Carlota_Pereda’s PIGGY (CERDITA) with a packed home crowd house in @sitgesfestival. Beautifully made and powerfully performed (especially by lead actress Laura Galán), but with shocking knock out twists throughout. See it soon!

Very much enjoyed @billyeichner's 'BROS'; a frank, funny, emotional film which walks a high wire act from gleefully subverting the rom-com genre to making a beautifully sincere entry. Big big guffaws throughout. Billy & Luke Macfarlane are beyond charming in the leads. Go see x
