This is so, so true. We seem to have learned nothing from the carpet-slippered creep of fascism into the mainstream in recent years. The Home Secretary not only *dreams* of deporting refugees to Rwanda, she boasts about it in public. twitter.com/TerryReintke/s…

But most of these 'anti-growth' people are the ones who keep pointing out how stupid it was to withdraw from the largest free market on the planet. It's just deeply, deeply weird to ignore the measurable & obvious damage this has done, is doing & will continue to do to 'growth'. twitter.com/nadhimzahawi/s…

We did an hour on this today. Fascinating calls, mostly from children of immigrants. I think we'll return to it tomorrow. Do encourage anyone you see on here deliberately (or even accidentally) misrepresenting what I've said to call in. All welcome. twitter.com/mrjamesob/stat…

@soniasodha She 'dreams' of deporting refugees, laughs about it, revels in the approval she receives. That is a deeply personal issue by any measure. And her family history makes it a different issue from, say, racists who talk about 'indigenous' people. I chose my words very carefully here.

Today’s treat: What is wrong with Suella Braverman, who ‘dreams’ of deporting refugees, & is it fair to bring her family’s own immigration history into the critique? Liz Truss’s speech & immediate reactions. Excellent stuff imho. globalplayer.com/podcasts/episo…

Looking at Truss’s CV, I’m wondering who actually ‘dismissed her potential’.

You're supposed to deny that you despise immigrants, champ. At least in public. twitter.com/NJ_Timothy/sta…

Good luck with that. twitter.com/benrileysmith/…

Very important piece. There is no valid reason to put these secretly-funded lobbyists on air. twitter.com/GeorgeMonbiot/…

Suella Braverman is now perilously close to making Priti Patel look like the second most callous & ignorant Home Secretary in living memory.

Children of immigrants who despise other immigrants probably shouldn’t be in charge of immigration policy. They often seem to be dealing with personal issues that shouldn’t be anywhere near the political space. People who protected & defended their parents might do a better job.

And the secretly-funded IEA’s herbert-in-chief just tried to stop journalists asking Kwasi Kwarteng about ‘politics’. These self-styled ‘libertarians’ never seem very fond of liberty. twitter.com/AdamBienkov/st…

It's remarkable how attitudes to both asylum-seekers and benefits claimants soften when the Daily Mail isn't raging against them every morning. I often wonder what the country would be like if stoking hatred & division hadn't proved so profitable for Rothermere, Murdoch & co.

One of the most enduring legacies of Brexit is the licence it gave to imbeciles to spout gibberish without consequence. twitter.com/AdamBienkov/st…

He’s absolutely furious about his own status, isn’t he? Derided & abandoned by his former allies, despised by everybody else & all too aware that his place in the history books will be as a deeply dishonest architect of national disaster. You could almost feel sorry for the man. twitter.com/Dominic2306/st…

That’s twice today Rees-Mogg has quoted from Macbeth. Both times he’s advertised his ignorance of what the quotation actually conveys. A florin says he’s got them both from his dictionary of quotations & doesn’t know the actual play from his elbow. twitter.com/TheNewsAgents/…
