Shell's facility that captures CO2 actually emits more than it is capturing. It has the same yearly carbon footprint as 1,2 million gas-powered cars. This is exactly what happens when people in power care more about their reputation and imagery than to actually reduce emissions. twitter.com/Global_Witness…

School strike week 192. This is not a “happy earth day”. It never has been. #EarthDay has turned into an opportunity for people in power to post their “love” for the planet, while at the same time destroying it at maximum speed. #PeopleNotProfit #FridaysForFuture #ClimateStrike

“I think naivety and childishness are sometimes a good thing.” The great thing about youth, she says, is you’re not blinded by realpolitik and the assumption of compromise. “I do think older people make things more complicated than they actually are.” theguardian.com/environment/ng…

Important reminder: When we criticize media's lack of reporting on the climate- and ecological emergency, we are not criticizing journalists. We are criticizing editorial decisions. As we've pointed out: there is no future for democracy without a strong, independent free press.

This basically sums up our current situation. The “code red” IPCC report came out a week ago. Since then not one politician has been held accountable. Not one politician has been asked how they are going to act in line with this. 1/4 (Graph by @Peters_Glen )

Exxon Mobil made a $56 billion net profit for 2022, setting a company record and a historic high for the western oil industry. While people were struggling to pay energy bills, fossil fuel companies who also destabilize the planet made record profits. reuters.com/business/energ…

Without any binding commitments to rapidly and immediately reduce greenhouse gases, the world stands no chance to deliver on the 1,5°C limit, and by doing so minimising risks of uprooting the life supporting systems we all depend on and endangering countless human lives. #COP27

The heavily subsidised energy plant Drax is the biggest single source of CO2 in the UK and third biggest in Europe. But the emissions are not included in the UK emissions. This loophole is unfortunately what many international climate targets rely on. 1/3 news.sky.com/story/climate-…

So it’s official. Unless the EU tear up their new #Fitfor55 package, the world will not stand a chance of staying below 1,5°C of global heating. That’s not an opinion, once you include the full picture it’s a scientific fact. #MindTheGap between words and action.

We should abandon the illusion that politicians will come to the rescue of planet Earth, especially those who delight in calling themselves climate leaders. Time and again they have betrayed the faith that has been placed in them. I write in @NewStatesman newstatesman.com/environment/20…

Today as always, it’s important to watch out for those who only listen to the uncomfortable truth when it fits in their agenda. To tackle this crisis, cherry picking some aspects, taking things out of context and ignoring the rest will lead us nowhere. It only fuels culture wars.

What a surprise... As it is now the people in power can get away with almost anything. All they have to do is to say some nice words and say they will "form alliances and work together to combat climate change". #COP26 twitter.com/RobbBla/status…

In 2010 our leaders signed "ambitious goals to protect wildlife and ecosystems”. By 2021 they'd failed on every single one. Each day they choose not to act. Instead they sign more “ambitious" non-binding future goals while passing policy locking in destructive business as usual. twitter.com/GretaThunberg/…

"Bolsonaro has approved a 24% cut to the environment budget for 2021 from the previous year’s level, just one day after vowing to increase spending to fight deforestation." Oops... it's almost as if our "climate leaders" aren't taking this seriously. theguardian.com/world/2021/apr…
