Seems this still needs saying: the Japanese wording for Bardock’s wish basically means “ I wish my sons grow up to be big strong men” and not “I wish that nothing bad will ever happen to my sons at any point in their whole entire lives, ever”

Toriyama’s comment for the DBS: Super Hero animanga notes how the movie is set “right before” the original manga’s final chapter (ie the end of Z). He says how the movie went over well, and the animanga allows you to make new discoveries (ie spot Easter eggs you missed before)

After drawing Sand Land, Toriyama lost his favorite wooden pen he’d used since before his professional debut, and the new pen he bought just wasn’t the same. So he’s used this as an excuse to hardly draw any more manga since then (laughs)
