The clouds behind Peach's Castle in the file select menu in Super Mario 64 DS do not appear there in-game (left). They are actually taken from the Shifting Sand Land background of the original Nintendo 64 version (right), the only such background reuse in the game.

According to the original 1985 design documents for Super Mario Bros., the first Goomba in World 1-1 was intended to start off on the blocks. According to Shigeru Miyamoto, this did not create a welcoming atmosphere, so the Goomba was moved to the ground to be easier to avoid.

At the 1994 European Computer Trade Show, Silicon Graphics presented "Project Reality", hardware that would later be used inside the Nintendo 64. One of the demos shown was a first-person perspective walk through a realistic town populated with cutouts of Nintendo characters.

In 1990, Nintendo of America filed a trademark for "Super Mario Sisters" to be used as the name of an electronic game program. However, the trademark was abandoned a year later without any product being released. To date, the original plans regarding the name remain unknown.

All mainline (non-arcade) Mario Kart games share this property: each title contains either the SNES Rainbow Road track or the Fake Item Box item, but never both at the same time. While it is most likely a coincidence, this is the only such exclusionary relationship in the series.

In the beginning segment of Luigi's Mansion 3, Luigi gets a disturbed look when near the hotel staff (left). The animation of him noticing the ghosts can only be seen during that segment and includes him going through several expressions in half a second (right).

The credits for Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door show a photo montage of the adventure. 49 out of the 50 photos are always the same. However, the photo of Ms. Mowz kissing Mario will show Goombella or Koops depending on who was active during that cutscene in that playthrough.

Pre-release screenshots of Super Mario RPG suggest that Knife Guy and Grate Guy were intended to have much more prominent roles in the game, as they are shown being fought at the very beginning of the game, and Knife Guy is shown in the overworld putting on a show for a crowd.

When exiting the Mushroom Shop in Mario Party, the camera quickly rotates past a corkboard. For a few frames during this, a wanted poster of Bowser is visible where Bowser is drawn with square, human-like teeth. On the right is the texture extracted from the game's data.

At a June 2018 Mario Tennis Aces tournament in Japan, visitors had the opportunity to take photos with actors in Mario, Luigi, Wario and Waluigi mascot costumes. This Waluigi costume is the first and so far only official Waluigi mascot costume ever made.

Boo's Boneyard Galaxy in Super Mario Galaxy consists of a main cave area, and this small bone planetoid Mario starts off on (left). Very far away from that planetoid, surrounded by empty space, is a single unobtainable Star Bit (right, see distance to area in upper right corner).

Unlicensed bedazzled shirt using Waluigi's official artwork for Mario Hoops 3-on-3, found in Arizona. Also note the unlicensed Monopoly branding partially visible behind the price tag.

In Luigi's Mansion 3, ghosts board up the entrance to the hotel, which gives the reason for why Luigi can't leave (left). However, approaching the door after the battle shows the boards and chains have disappeared (right), meaning Luigi would be free to leave, but chooses not to.

When opening the data of the NES version of Mario is Missing in a hex editor, the word "gotcha" can be found at address 0x1F792 (the 128914th byte), spelled out in plain text amid executable code. This is likely an Easter egg message directed at hackers and dataminers.

When the Ultimate Unauthorized Nintendo Game Strategies book (left) was published in Mexico, the cover was redrawn to include Mario who, to avoid copyright issues, has a sheet over his face and the logo of publisher Ventura on his cap instead of his usual emblem (right).

Normally, the items in the Present Room in Mario Party 4 have properly written descriptions. However, the Party Star trophy, obtained by 100%ing the game, has only uncapitalized placeholder text. This is likely due to it being so hard to obtain it was overlooked during testing.

In Super Mario Sunshine, Yoshi has a steadily emptying "Juice" meter (left). When it runs out, Yoshi briefly turns green before disintegrating. In the international versions, the meter reads "Fruit" during this (middle). In the Japanese version, it reads "Hungry" instead (right).

Outtake shot from the making of the North American commercial for Mario Party 6. Although the broadcast version also included Bowser's face being drawn on by children, it was shown from a different angle and lacked the prominent lipstick.

In Yoshi's Woolly World, Little Mousers appear to be made entirely from yarn, as most other enemies (left). However, viewing them from up close in the Scrapbook Theater, we can see their ears are buttons attached to their bodies by their masks threaded through the holes (right).

Last September, I posted about the leg count difference between the official art of Wiggler from Super Mario RPG (top left) and his sprite (bottom left). As it turns out, the sprite is instead based on rare scrapped pre-release art, seen in the British Superplay magazine (right).

In Super Mario Maker 2, whenever Pom Pom takes damage, she briefly gains extra fingers on both hands (left and middle). This is likely due to her model being imported from Super Mario 3D World, where she has two hand variations, and those two being loaded simultaneously (right).

In the Gooigi tutorial in Luigi's Mansion 3, E. Gadd places water in Gooigi's path, which causes him to dissolve. If the player is already aware of that and avoids the water, E. Gadd will interrupt and explicitly request Gooigi to step into the water, laughing as he dissolves.
