To clarify: Fashion + appreciate of art is never wrong. But slavery is. Social media encourages status-driven posts and wearing new outfits all the time. Rewiring our thinking is difficult unless we understand what makes us want to buy more than we need in the first place.

I am really passionate about this topic... I've thought my way through this issue for years. I love craftsmanship + I love looking nice. But nowadays I mainly buy things that feel joyful. And I'm very aware when I buy something for a 'This will elevate my self worth!' feeling.

People often surround themselves with expensive/ designer goods on instagram because they don't feel whole. We try to derive internal self worth from EXTERNAL items, which is why, no matter how much a person buys, it will never 'complete' them internally. So they keep buying.

Don’t be seduced by celebs/ artists wearing different outfits every day on Instagram. Most of these outfits are loaned by designers.
The mentality of 'Oh I can't wear this outfit again because people have seen me in it' is DEEPLY insecure, conformist bullshit.

3. Buy less, and better quality. It lasts longer, you’ll value it more and it will make you happy every time you put the item on. 😊

2. Buy vintage/ pre-loved. Almost all of ‘Electra Heart’ + some of ‘Froot’s looks came vintage + second hand stores.
(If you love designer, there are excellent online pre-loved stores like Vestiare. Great for rare stuff that no one else is wearing, FYI).

Tonight I’m writing down a list of my actions that have led to hurting the planet. I’m also thinking of how to live and work differently after this is over.

If our only focus is on politics + anxiety, we are missing a huge opportunity to think about how our individual actions have damaged our planet. The virus is just bringing this into focus, and at a tragic cost to human life. We can't expect to abuse a planet with no retaliation.
