Spoiler: these changes to the Modern Slavery Act have been in the pipeline for ages and will do v little to help #Uyghurs
Have to call it our: this is a window dressing to see off the #NoGenocideTrade rebellion.

From @Nus_Ghani in support of the #NoGenocideTrade amendment.
The UK says genocide is a matter for judges not politicians. Fine. So let’s pass this amendment and allow them to rule on China’s atrocities.

Why is this not “incitement to violence” when tweeted by Chinese State media @Twitter?
205
Another long day working on the #GenocideAmendment - grateful for amazing colleagues and constant encouragement from #Uyghur and #HK friends who are suffering. “I’d rather be ashes than dust”.
206
Rumours of some kind of #Uyghur Protection Act! This will be far more meaningful for Uyghurs than the changes trailed over the weekend about the Modern Slavery Act.
But still no sign of anything about genocide. So we must keep pushing.

Raab speech:
- Due diligence guidance for businesses operating in Uyghur region
- Fines for businesses which don’t comply with Modern Slavery Act
- Public sector exclusion Slavery businesses
- Review of export controls
208
For the uninitiated, the UK’s policy for decades has been that we WILL NOT use the word “Genocide” and WILL NOT act under the Genocide Convention unless the courts determine it.
But this is not possible through the UN because of China’s veto.
Amendment offers a way through.
209
Scratching my head at @DominicRaab today
👉Said we "shouldn't outsource" genocide judgment to the courts
👉But said only judges can rule on genocide
This is not consistent.
210
As a fan of @DominicRaab I wish he’d lead from the front on China. Today’s statement was a hyped up re-presentation of months-old policies + strong rhetoric. An effort to kill backbench support for the Genocide Amendment. Me for @Telegraph telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/01/1…

🤬This is an utter disgrace, and humiliation for the UK.
British QC flown into prosecute Jimmy Lai and 8 others.

Don’t even talk to me about the cab-rank rule. This guy has been hired to assist Lam’s cronies in procuring prosecutions of lifelong peaceful democrats. He’ll go down at Hong Kong’s Percy Yutar.

Sir Malcolm Rifkind, former Foreign Secretary, backs the #NoGenocideTrade amendment in today's @ConHome ahead of the launch of @CPHumanRights report on China led by the brilliant @benedictrogers

A Minister has just texted a big group of MPs about the #GenocideAmendment
“There are many problems with the...amendment, including the fact that past genocides might be in scope (which could mean Turkey, could even mean Canada or Australia)
Is this true? Judge for yourself:
222
Very strange arguments here from @DominicRaab on #GenocideAmendment
1. Amend. DOES NOT provide for a criminal process, but a “preliminary determination”.
2. Two former Supreme Court judges said High Court was correct authority when drafting.
3. He wants judges to investigate?? twitter.com/BBCPolitics/st…

Nice to be vindicated by the @FT - many thought my @Telegraph piece on Raab’s statement was harsh. It was simply factual.👇 ft.com/content/d67c7b…
224
FYI @DominicRaab @GregHands @mariacaulfield @nadams - we agree with👇 100% but, as you know, court route will be blocked by China’s veto. How then do we uphold our Genocide Convention obligations?
Inoperable and immoral policy which must now change.

😡Shocking. @LOS_Fisher article on leaked Government advice re: #GenocideAmendment. Here's the real reason Government wanted to offer an alternative:
