A clarification since a lot of people seem to be confused: in the JP version the Straw Hats are called the "Nine Great Officers" (大幹部), NOT "Nine Commanders" (将星). Commanders are the top elite of a crew (usually around 3 or 4), Officers refer to the more relevant members

Obviously Oda saying he plans to end One Piece in 3 years doesn't mean he necessarily will. but at the same time, he's been fairly accurate in the past and he's not a liar like some rumors say he is. Here's a chart of Oda's estimates in the past:
