Nine years before September 11th, AG Barr secretly became the godfather of mass surveillance. Today Senators are finally calling for an ethics investigation into how such an obviously unconstitutional program ever came to be authorized, and how it currently operates. twitter.com/charlie_savage…

PERMANENT RECORD has just been adapted for young readers and schools. It took a lot of work, but making the systems that will control and influence our children's entire lives understandable to them is something I feel very important. Order link: read.macmillan.com/mcpg/permanent…

Somebody needs to tell @tim_cook and @Apple's board that if this many people are wading through *two-thousand word* tracts on the future cost of their proposed "client-side scanning" system, Apple needs to correct course: "Delay" the rollout. Blame new research. Kill it quietly.

"It took years — eight years and counting in exile — for me to realize that I was missing the point: we talk about conspiracy theories in order to avoid talking about conspiracy practices, which are often too daunting, too threatening, too total." edwardsnowden.substack.com/p/conspiracy-p…

Domestically and internationally, the mass surveillance regime that we exposed in 2013 has been repeatedly found to be a violation of both the law as written and human rights. What a road we have traveled! Thank you so much to everyone who fought this case to the highest level. twitter.com/privacyint/sta…

“Human rights have not been in a crisis like this since the end of the Second World War,” says Manfred Nowak, the former United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture. We should listen. shhhcretly.com/2020/02/02/shh…

Twitter just locked my wife @lsjourneys's account for an ancient baby photo that even *spineless Instagram* had no problem with. Do parents need to worry? Are baby butts, happy bath photos, etc. banworthy now?

It is grotesque that media repeats the political language of "Americans who want to leave," when "Americans who don't want to leave" is being used to categorize those who WANT to leave, but are being refused permission to take their Afghan families. They can't just abandon them.

What a victory! Though it may take decades, the courts are coming around on mass surveillance. We all owe an enormous debt to @privacyint for suing to end the practice of using a single generic warrant to spy on an unlimited number of people. twitter.com/privacyint/sta…

Don't use biometrics for anti-fraud. In fact, don't use biometrics for anything.

You taught us so much. I'll miss you, old friend.

BIG: Presidential hopefuls should be asked their position on the costly failure of the NSA's unconstitutional mass surveillance program, part of which is up for renewal on March 15th. Today's report reveals a long history of abuse & no meaningful success. nytimes.com/2020/02/25/us/…

Fact-checkers out here leaping on hand grenades to shelter (precious baby angel) corporations from any suggestion that (fair, well-earned) profit margins might have a closer connection to (reluctant, justifiable) price inflation than (wicked, hell-born) modest wage increases. twitter.com/TeddieRedder/s…

Within a monoculture, there is tremendous pressure to participate in the enforcement of consensus as if it were truth, which alienates members from the possibility that truth can often stand in opposition to consensus. edwardsnowden.substack.com/p/culturalrevo…

When Daniel Hale did just that, you threw him in prison. Reality Winner did it. Guess what? Prison. Chelsea Manning did it—still prison. The answer isn't for the government to stop talking like this—the answer is to stop ruling in a way that makes it the blackest kind of lie. twitter.com/StateDeptSpox/…
